I'll go on record with a prediction of 15 years for construction, and final costs well above $1.5 billion...

I am clinging to a tiny hope that the NDP will have been relegated to the dustbin of history by the time the new museum opens.

I for one would be fine handing everything Native to the First Nations.  They can do whatever they want with it.  As far as the other portions of the museum, my guess is that they are hoping that 8 years is enough time where no-one will remember what used to be on display and what artifacts have gone missing.

Is this another example where Reconciliation is being used by some to enable reverse racism and segregation?

Officials concluded that some exhibits were outdated and focused too much on the European colonial past. That prompted a rushed makeup effort that involved shutting down the Old Town exhibit, logging and fishing displays and replica displays of Capt. George Vancouver’s ship, Discovery.

When a groundswell of protests developed over the closing of those features, the government started changing the story on the fly.

Tourism Minister Melanie Mark wrote a column in this paper that dropped any mention of decolonization. She cited seismic risks, asbestos hazards and poor accessibility and broadened the scope of the challenges.

“Sadly, the facilities are at the end of their useful life.”

That’s debatable, given that the adjacent Parliament Buildings and Empress Hotel face the same site challenges and are far older. There are lots of circa-1967 buildings (the museum is from that era) still functional. The grounds for the key decision about renovating versus completely rebuilding are not clear yet. Premier John Horgan said there have been a number of studies and officials concluded a rebuild is best for the long-term.

What has happened to the NDP?  They weren't this radical and illogical with their first term.  Surely they know that these statement are not believable.

It’s sad.

Maybe the plan is to give Victoria a fancy new museum and move the legislature elsewhere, but maintain the old legislature as another museum.

It's a direct result of the idiot electorate (but not me) giving the NDP an absurd majority in the dishonourable pandemic election of 2020.

More likely tear down the legislative buildings in the name of decolonization.

I can't wait to see the ACAB floor, the 300 million bicycle exhibit and the Burn the Church Down Discover Centre.

Alongside a display of extinct GPs!

I would be perfectly fine with the natives building a museum to house and display their artifacts, perhaps in the Rock Bay area.

Leave the RBCM which is the history of the development and growth of BC where it is.

Our readers say: New $789 million museum is not a priority

Premier John Horgan’s announcement that his government will spend $789 million to replace the Royal B.C. Museum after a seven-year demolition and replacement program drew a strong response from our readers.

Announcing a billion dollar museum right now is pretty tone deaf- it speaks volumes about how out of touch the premier is.

If he was a victim of renoviction looking for a new apartment at twice the cost; or if he just faced his cancer issue without a family doctor; or if he’d lost his life savings because covid restrictions killed his business… then he’d understand this is not the time for legacy projects.

But instead he never missed a paycheque; he owns his home; and his excellent medical care caught his cancer early. These are all privileges not afforded to many in this town.

Is there a chance this plan could be put on the back-burner?

Two announcements today as to how the BC Government plans to pay for Horgan's folly.

1. Teachers will no longer be able to provide rescue medication to children having seizures. In other words keep your kids at home and pay to home school them so we can reduce the number of teachers and TAs we need in the public system.

2. BC is planning to launch neuro-diverse hubs for the care of kids. In other words treating autism is very expensive so lets get rid of individual care plans and lump those kids in with those who have less expensive needs.

Back-burner reconciliation and de-colonization?

As I surmised months ago, the bigger plan is to transfer the museum to FN ownership after completion (ie the 'partnership' that Horgan announced). If that doesn't proceed then the NDP would lose a large block of support.

So among the NDP supporters out there, surely we can all recognize this is not the time for a billion dollar museum, and if it's as critical to Victoria's economy as supporters say it is, its closure for a decade is peculiar.

Unless deep down inside we really don't want tourists as that conflicts with our messaging on net zero and a green society.

Horgan and his party aren't the NDP as most British Columbians would remember the actual NDP under Mike Harcourt or his predecessors.

The real NDP would never have called a borderline illegal election during a pandemic, and the real NDP would have long ago done whatever was required to solve the family doctor crisis in B.C.

Horgan now leads a party that somehow exists only to pander to social justice crazies, and get itself reelected.

It serves no other purpose in B.C. right now, and represents nothing that the historical NDP might have stood up for.

Regardless, Horgan has to go before he drives the Province into the ground financially, and barely leaves British Columbians with third world health care.
