I agree. I had to find a fill-in host for my show from nomination day to the election (CRTC / Elections rules) as being on-air would have given me, or appeared to have given me, an unfair advantage.

--- wow I didn't know that .

So who's doing your show ...?

And, can they talk about the 1935-On-To-Ottawa-Trek ...?

(not that it's totally relevant in today's , " Tent-City in Victoria" type World ...! )

Glenn Parfitt will be hosting my show every Sat until Nov 15. I am back on-air Nov 22. And I agree the 1935 Ottawa Trek would be a good topic to profile. If you or anyone knows an individual(s) who can tell some of that story please send me a private message with their contact info. Thx Ted!

All council members act as acting Mayor on occasion -- it's a rotating schedule -- and it was Dean's shift. Without the homeless shelter announcement we would probably not have noticed.
IMO I think if you have been charged with assault, arson or murder the previous week you should decline the opportunity to be acting mayor. Otherwise, what the heck.

I don't agree. This is an unfair advantage. Point blank.
I just read another press release concerning cameras downtown with Dean as acting Mayor.
How long is this schedule?
It's awfully close to election.
Is Alan Lowe back in town yet?

The other part of that is Susan Woods being told (someone find a link for me) that her radio show on CFAX provided an unfair advantage. Sorry, in that case no one who blogs, works for a marketing company or ever shook hands with the President of the Union Club should be allowed to run - it is ridiculous.

Dean Fortin is acting Mayor until Alan Lowe returns - acting mayor is rotated monthly, and set by a vote in council. In this case, I do agree, as he is running for Mayor maybe he should pass on the 'acting' position to a another councillor (who is not running again for anything) - hence lies the problem.

This is a clear case where the municipalities act, City of Victoria policy and Elections Canada are behind the times.

So surely council was aware of the upcoming municipal election and the timing of rotation.
So now a candidate in the running is acting as mayor up until the election?

I would guess the same as an elected Mayor running again as an incumbent...

You are right - there is an appearance of favouritism, and a possible unfair advantage. Not sure what the answer is...incumbents, by their position, have an advantage, and the work of city council does not stop during an election.

Actually it is a long-held CRTC rule that radio/tv folks must take a leave of absence 'during' a campaign to even the playing field. The premise being that media coverage needs to be fair and equitable for all candidates.

Leads me to wonder tho' why none of the broadcast media outlets in Victoria have provided any new candidates with coverage/interviews. I have heard some incumbants on the air these past few weeks - but thats all. Would be nice (fair) if they would have groups of three or four new candidates on at one time to debate - and spread it over two weeks. Seems like a waste of an opportunity to me.

Oh well, life isn't fair. Just interesting.

Is there a CRTC/Elections Canada rule over you being a 'contributor' to another CFAX program (or other media outlet), and if you are interviewed on a totally separate topic (or provide content) to CFAX while the campaign runs does it have to be attributed to 'Susan Woods - Victoria City Council candidate', or is it banned altogether?

You don't have to answer to the above Susan - those are the kind of questions that should be answered by the relevant authorities, it truly is unfair. As I understand the regulations (which only cover radio and TV), if you ran, or contributed to a successful website (say historical), those same rules would not apply - someone show me the difference.

So do we have an answer concerning a mayoral electorate whose an incumbent to begin with?
Can he/will/be questioned?
Anyone I've spoken to has taken this as abusing the system. It may backfire on Dean.

abusing the system? what, by taking your turn as acting mayor when you are also seeking office as a mayoral condidate?

gosh -- that slippery Alan Lowe character kept acting as Mayor leading up to the municipal election -- even in those years when he was seeking re-election as Mayor!

talk about your unfair advantage!

The polling has Fortin ahead of Reid for a fair bit so I think you are seeing some sour grapes. Sort of like McCain supporters now complaining that the Internet provides an unfair advantage because it has allowed Obama to raise so much money.

That analogy is pushing it, methinks.

Dean is a councillor running for mayor. That's quite different from a mayoral incumbent doing his job as a mayor of a city during an election.

If Susan Woods has to step down from her radio show on CFAX during her candidacy, Fortin should have passed the torch on to either Helen Hughes or Bea Holland.

People who plan to vote for someone other than Fortin are not necessarily in support of Reid. Reid is not as popular among the business/right voters as some expected (and hoped) him to be.

I think that the problem is that many business/right voters don't like the people who are "behind" Rob.

Chris Coleman was smart enough to see it but I don't think that Rob has figured out that everything comes with a price.
