I want to get a job at that waterslide now that it's wheelchair friendly. I want to be the guy that hauls people out of their wheelchairs and chucks them down the slide. I think it would be fun, especially for the people who don't realize the top floor contains a waterslide.

I'm surprised residents didn't pull the hazard to low-flying aircraft card.

Oddly enough, the new plan's larger sloping roof, combined with a move to put part of the slide underneath that roof, and an additional sloping line from east to west, are the things that make it comply with the bylaw, said those on the commission.

The building's allowable height is determined by a complicated equation that finds the weighted mean average height of a sloping roof. It involves comparing the high and low points of the roof, said Doug Henderson, administrator at the rec centre.

So the first proposal was tall but not nearly massive enough? Now it's a bit taller but much more massive, so it's okay?

What good are regulations like this if they produce the sorts of buildings that people don't like?

But that is ignoring the beauty of this whole situation. You complain about a building so they conform to their own rules and it gets even worse for you.

If only there were a bylaw like this in Victoria, a 20 storey tower would have to be 3 blocks wide.

From the T-C article:

The previous elevator and stairway building tower dimension was about six metres by six metres. The new one is six metres by 18.8 metres.

...I think G-Man is just about right on the money with his ratio.

No kidding.

Anyway, this is insane. Now I suppose the neighbours will relent and it will get its variances to go back to the original design.

Me too. This is one of my favourite local "protest" stories. NIMBYs complain that their "God-given" view will be impeded by an outrageously high tower, only to be foiled by the intracies of byzantine legislation. In the end, a higher, wider tower will be built that will impede even more of "their" view. Sometimes you just have to smile at poetic justice. :)

Waterslide could be first in North America

By Jeff Bell, Times Colonist
July 19, 2009

Names of those who donate $25 or more toward the elevator will go into a draw for the First Down the Slide party for 20 people before the official opening on Oct. 24, said Henderson. He said the idea for an accessible slide as part of a major refit for the pool area was initiated by Panorama officials. Carolwood got involved, just as it has in the past. A few years ago, the foundation raised about $10,000 for an accessible playground.

I think those reading this post could easily round up $25 which we would all donate on behalf of all NIMBYs, BANANAs and CAVE members in North Saanich.

Yeah, I don't really do water slides but this case was such a blatant good vs evil conflict I really want to donate. Come on, water slide for disabled kids vs rich spoiled nimby's ? You don't get such ridiculous conflicts outside of gi-joe or captain planet.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE NORTH SAANICH WATERSLIDE THAT ORIGINALLY ANGERED NEARBY RESIDENTS SHOULD BE COMPLETE EARLY OCTOBER.

THE GRAND OPENING DATE IS SET FOR OCTOBER 24 -- CURRENTLY THE REC CENTRE IS HOLDING A CONTEST TO WIN A 'FIRST DOWN THE SLIDE' POOL PARTY.

ACCORDING TO REC CENTRE ADMINISTRATOR DOUG HEDERSON, ENTRY IS BY DONATION WITH THE MONEY HELPING FUND AN ELEVATOR THAT WILL GIVE THE SLIDE THE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE ONLY WATERSLIDE IN NORTH AMERICA OFFERING ACCESS FOR PEOPLE WITH LIMITED MOBILITY.

LAST SEPTEMBER DEAN PARK RESIDENTS SAW THEIR PETITION TO STOP CONSTRUCTION OF THE WATERSLIDE TOWER THROWN OUT OF BC SUPREME COURT. THE JUDGE SAID ALTHOUGH THE HEIGHT BYLAW WAS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND HE COULDN'T LEGALLY STOP THE TOWER.
