Simon Nattrass did, didn't he?

Yep, I guess that is one advantage to not having all that 'experience' that socializes you to the culture of city hall.

Sadly with Simon's infinitesimal chance of becoming mayor in November this issue is not likely to get raised at Victoria City Hall any time soon.

Come on Simon, there are now 2 council seats up for grabs. Please reconsider your Quixotic quest for the Mayor's position and make a real pledge for a council seat and some much valued political experience. In 3 or more likely 6 years time, if you are still so inclined, run for mayor then. In the meantime you can make amalgamation your personal crusade while on council.:)

That's a good idea. I'm sure a very vocal pro-amalgamation candidate can win a council seat.

I don't know if he would, considering most of the pro-amalgamation people live in Saanich. :\

But I definitely do agree it would be a better idea for him to run for council.

He does need to pay some political dues, get some things done. Not possible to take him seriously at this time.

Is that true? I always speculated that Saanich doesn't want anything to do with us (Victoria), sort of like OB. If it's true, though, that would be great! Saanich is the biggest muni around here, right? If they got on board, we'd have a chance, maybe, to work it...

Ironically, it was Victoria back in 1906 that rejected the Oak Bay residents so they formed their own muncipality.

Back then Oak Bay was a lower class working suburb. The only "curtain" it had was a shoddy flag hung in some poor soul's window ;)

Oak Bay would later have it's revenge by rejecting both the Saanich Panhandle and Gordon Head neighbourhoods from joining.

Bah, Oak Bay is still sore that it never saw the economic driver of the Cadboro Bay Village coming, and didn't annex it.

I'm not a fan of amalgamation having seen the asinine fiascos that have gone down in other cities but Carolyn Heiman makes some very good arguments in today's T-C.

Saving money has been studied in relation to amalgamation, turns out there are few savings to be had - there is an emeritus prof at UVic that has looked into it in detail.

The benefit of amalgamation comes from having our municipal boundaries reflect the communities we live in. The core of the region, basically the boundaries of SD 61, is a single city and can not have a unified vision and plan unless it is one city and not five.

Our current set up means there are many neighbourhoods divided between two local governments. Unifying the neighbourhoods is a benefit of amalgamation because there will be a consistency of planning and by-laws. Remember, the Victoria and Oak Bay boundary actually bisects a number of properties on the border and even bisects houses.

Amalgamation will also reduce the number of councils and the public and media will be able to better pay attention to what is going on at the council level.

The examples people always site never started from the asinine set-up we have in the CRD. No one wants to turn the lower half of the island into a single mega-city.

We want some respect of the fact that congruent and logical municpal areas are created. The argument that Halifax or Toronto didn't realize the cost benefit of amalgamation is of no consequence when really we just need Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay and Esquimalt to merge. In most places this would be the small city municpality.

People in outlying areas of Victoria are benefiting while City of Victoria taxpayers are paying their way. It is not just. Perhaps our police should be resident based so that if a person from Saanich has their car broken into in Victoria they have to get the police report from Saanich police. Same for muggings and car accidents.

Perhaps if an event is sponsored by the City of Victoria, it should be free for Victorians but if you live on Cloverdale you have to pay 10 bucks.

I am not sure that this is true. The Victoria - Oak bay border is Foul Bay Road.

^ Not south of OB Ave. There, it's a straight line, whereas Foul Bay Rd is wriggly and partially in Victoria.
