The right thing to do is not necessarily the popular thing to do.
I suppose it comes down to how you define "right" and how you measure the success of the program.
If it takes just one plastic bag and drinking straw out of the ocean, was it worth a city or country-wide change?
If it takes just one thousand plastic bags and drinking straws out of the ocean, was it worth a city or country-wide change?
What about a million bags?
Have you considered the resources that have to go into producing the reusable materials that'll replace so-called "single use" bags? Have you considered all the special purpose bags that will now be required to replace all the plastic grocery bags for things like garbage, dog poop, etc...? I'm still going to throw away just as many plastic bags, just in a different form.
I'm not convinced the crusade to ban plastic bags is going to have a net-positive environmental benefit. Are you?

Especially as I plan on going out of my way to purchase plastic bags for the sole purpose of tossing them in public garbage bins*.
*loosely so they stand a fair chance of making their way to the ocean

But they do give you a 3 cents/bag discount if you bring in your own bags.

All Red Barn Markets to go plastic bag-free in accordance with Victoria's July 1st bag ban
https://victoria.cit...ly-1st-bag-ban/
They can't even enforce bylaw infractions by pot shops...

Very disappointing to see Red Barn Market turning this into a profit centre in municipalities outside of Victoria.
Won't ever be shopping at any of their stores ... greedy bastards.
Fairways gets all my business, and when I ask if they're going to start charging for bags, I always get a big laugh, and a loud "NO!".

Forget the bylaws, city council has directed VicPD to ignore federal laws governing the stuff.
But by golly, should you want to carry groceries home in a plastic bag it's off to the gallows for you!

I think there are 3 Fairways within Vic proper? It'll be interesting if they ignore the July 1st deadline.

There aren't any more in Victoria proper ... just the one in the old Safeway building on Quadra.

I am almost certain none of those places are in the City of Victoria...and therefore not subject to the bag ban.
