I would rank the danger from straws as less of a threat than possibly getting shivved downtown or stepping on a needle in the park. A nice to do, perhaps, but way way down the list of priorities. Low hanging fruit indeed.

What if you get shivved by a straw?

...Low hanging fruit indeed.

Definitely, but it's sure to appeal to a certain demographic in time for the October municipal election.

What type of straws do they have in prison?

Straw bans have now been announced by Vancouver, Seattle and Alaska Airlines. Other jurisdictions also considering a ban, most notably the entire country of Britain.

I'm thinking, but not certain, that prison shivv instruments are somewhat controlled.

I don't need a straw for your average drink at the bar or pop at McDonald's, but how are people supposed to drink a slurpee or a milkshake?

What if you are using a drive thru and dinking the pop while you drive?

Will we have to bring our own metal spoons to eat a Blizzard?

What about plastic cutlery? Can't let that escape the noose!

Helps' nanny state, hard at work with your tax dollars.

Good idea.  That one is much easier.  The Public Market has wooden cutlery.

So we get to trade off risk of bacterial contamination vs landfill concerns.

Yep. Single use plastics are one of the biggest reasons why humankind doesn't have disease and death like we used to.

Paper straw.

paper straws go soggy, and would never last through a full slurpee

How many tens of thousands of pounds of plastic and galvanized steel was made redundant when the City provided every home with new tote bins?

Probably 100,000 times more plastic than Victoria’s yearly drinking straw consumption, in weight/landfill addition.
