I am not sure, that's why I am asking.

The Clipper & Coho are not cruise ships.

They can resume as soon as the border is open.

In a notice on the company's website, Norwegian Cruise Line said it will not accept mixed vaccination protocols on cruises that embark or disembark from U.S. ports.

https://www.ctvnews....tions-1.5514985

"For ships embarking or disembarking at US ports, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and/or World Health Organization (WHO) authorized single brand vaccination protocol will be accepted. Including, J&J Janssen, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/Oxford. Mixed vaccination protocol will not be accepted (i.e. Pfizer + Moderna or AstraZeneca + Pfizer, etc)," the statement read.

Does anyone know what the many dozens of Tyvek-wrapped thingies at Ogden Point is all about?

Let me guess, covid testing.

Assuming that we will still have the requirement for visitors to Canada to have a recent PCR test, I am assuming that few showing up at Ogden will be getting off of the cruise ship until they pay their $$$ and get a test.

on the subject of garbage would it be fair to suggest that the cruise ships dump so much here because it's either the cheapest or easiest (or both) place to dump it?  the ship leaves seattle full of food etc.  it's not like it "creates" garbage on the cruise, it converts food and other items like wrapping to garbage as the week passes.  why not just take the garbage back to seattle?

Cruise ship waste materials offloaded at Ogden Point include solid wastes such as garbage, organics, hazardous wastes, recyclable goods, furniture and construction waste.

Liquid wastes may include blackwater (sewage), grey water (from sinks, showers, laundry), oily bilge water, hazardous liquids, and toxic scrubber waste.

Tens of thousands of tonnes of waste materials are transported by large industrial trucks through residential streets to Hartland landfill and various unknown locations on Vancouver Island and the mainland.

Accepting waste materials originating in another country is contrary to local and regional waste reduction goals. We say “no” to foreign garbage.

I would be just as happy if the cruise ships never came back.

No cruise ships, and the tax equation will drastically change in the CoV, which is heavily reliant on commercial property for taxation. Lots of empty spaces means commercial landowners will lobby hard to tweak the mill rates, and it wouldn't take long for Victoria to see Toronto-level property taxation.

and shots fired right back by the harbour authority.

During each of these webinars, members of the community learned, asked questions, and challenged all of us to work together toward a strong return of cruise to our region. This type of dialogue will continue, with a hopeful return to connecting with the community in-person rather than just virtually.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reaffirmed that misinformation easily spreads; broad statements and inaccurate claims shared by the James Bay Neighbourhood Association about how waste is managed in Victoria and emissions are monitored and controlled in Canadian waters continues to be disappointing.

Most recently, the assertion was made in their monthly newsletter that our shore-power project was not moving forward, which was not true.

While areas under our management and on our properties are enhanced, we also stand alongside hard-working and dedicated members of the local cruise industry as they work toward continuous improvement throughout the entire cruise journey.

Perhaps the best example of this improvement would be the work of Victoria-based Pacific Northwest Transportation Services, which operates a fleet of highway coaches and shuttles to service the industry in the region.

In 2019, they prepared for an increase in cruise passengers by shifting from several single-floor buses to double-decker buses so that the same number of tires would hit the road but would be able to carry more people effectively and efficiently.

The company is also working toward zero emissions, has electric vehicles in their fleet, and are investing in hydrogen conversion technology. It is stories like these that benefit from clear and accurate information and facts, not broad assertions based on observation.

We have and continue to provide our feedback and insights on the future of cruise in Greater Victoria and yet, in November 2020, the neighbourhood association chose not to include our submission as part of their planning and engagement process.

We believe in open and transparent dialogue that focuses on solutions and moving forward. A copy of this feedback was also placed on our website and sent to Victoria’s mayor and council to provide increased transparency from our organization.

Our community liaison committee begins this fall and we have invited the neighbourhood association to join us for solutions-focused discussions alongside First Nations, our member agencies and community organizations in Greater Victoria.

Working together finds solutions and creates strong communities, but presenting incomplete information gets us nowhere. We await their reply.

The problem with your assumption is that property owners are rich, elites buggers who don't pay their fair share in taxes! The City still gets paid the same amount even if the properties sit empty. Besides, if the retailers go out of business there will be others to replace them!

Those property owners are already lobbying the city to adjust the tax burden on commercial properties.

A drastically reduced cruise industry will reduce the value of retail spaces, which in turn will make the tax equation untenable. Tenants are happy to pay the high tax burden on behalf of the landlord if they’re making good money.

^ I am sure lots of people are asking! Can you imagine though if retailers along Government went out of business and then the City bought all of the property for use as affordable housing?! Political buddies could get housing right away while every else waited for decades on a 'wait list'. Socialist nirvana and just like they do it in Europe!

20 years ago there were no cruise ships and Government street did just fine. Lots of people trying to get us back to that time!

Cruise ships have been visiting Victoria since the 70s, no?

The industry really ramped up in the 2000s, though. Before that we had about half of the annual visits we saw in 2019.
