There is life beyond Butchart Gardens...

Agreed, but not all the homeless in doorways and on the street are willing to sign the necessary releases allowing commercial operators to use their images.

As of July 18, 2022, CDC’s COVID-19 Program for Cruise Ships is no longer in effect. CDC will continue to publish guidance to help cruise ships continue to provide a safer and healthier environment for passengers, crew and communities going forward. For more information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

Cruise lines start dropping COVID-19 vaccine requirements

Canada to require proof of vaccination on cruises, unlike Europe, U.S.

We already know that cruise ship outbreaks featuring Norovirus can be devastating, so one can only imagine what a cruise ship full of unvaxed, COVID stricken Americans will look like.

Personally, I'm quite comfortable not having thousands of unvaxed Yanks walking up and down Government Street, in and out of every shop, all on a sunny Victoria day.

On Thursday the CDC changed its guidelines so vaccinated and unvaccinated should follow exactly the same protocols.

https://abcnews.go.c...ory?id=88252980

This is the same guidance that was previously given to vaccinated and boosted people who were exposed to COVID and essentially simplifies the CDC's quarantine recommendation. Americans who are exposed to the virus, regardless of vaccination status, no longer need to stay at home if they've had an exposure, per the CDC's latest guidelines.

Canadian science is different though.

...Canadian science is different though.

Canadian political science is different, and that's been the source of all pandemic directives since February 2020.

Maybe. I guess this season is a wrap more or less. We will see where we are next year.

Only the ones who dissent with the official party line.

An Alaska-bound cruise ship set sail from Vancouver Monday after an almost daylong delay because of a tugboat strike sparked a flood of complaints from stranded passengers.

The Celebrity Eclipse had been scheduled to depart at 4 p.m. Sunday, but Celebrity Cruises said the ship became stuck in the Port of Vancouver because it was attached to a barge whose crew was refusing to remove it.

Passenger Steve Bains said the captain announced just after midday Monday that the union and its workers had agreed to detach the ship from the barge, and later sent photos confirming the ship set sail around 12:45 p.m.

The cruise line said on its Twitter account that the ship will skip its trip to Icy Strait in Alaska, but will stick to the rest of the weeklong itinerary as planned.

It will also be issuing a "credit equal to the amount of 1.5 days" and that any excursions booked through the company for Icy Strait would be cancelled and refunded, it said.

I bet some of the more litigious passengers look into suing Seaspan.

Royal Caribbean Group (NYSE: RCL) announced today its plan to implement SpaceX’s Starlink – making the Group the first in the cruise industry to adopt its high-speed, low-latency connectivity for a better onboard experience for guests and crew fleetwide. The innovative broadband internet service will be installed on all Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises ships, along with all new vessels for each of the brands.

Deployment of the Starlink technology across the fleet will begin immediately, leveraging the insights obtained from the trial onboard Freedom of the Seas, which has received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from guests and crew. The installation is slated to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2023.

“Our purpose as a company is to deliver the best vacation experiences to our guests responsibly, and this new offering, which is the biggest public deployment of Starlink’s high-speed internet in the travel industry so far, demonstrates our commitment to that purpose,” said Jason Liberty, president and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean Group. “This technology will provide game-changing internet connectivity onboard our ships, enhancing the cruise experience for guests and crew alike.

It will improve and enable more high-bandwidth activities like video streaming as well as activities like video calls. Using Starlink is one more example of our continued focus on innovation and excellence for our guests, our crew, the communities we visit and our shareholders.”

Faster and more reliable internet will also make it easier for guests and crew to remain connected to work, family and friends – no matter where they are in the world.

Next year’s cruise season could bring a record one million passengers to Victoria’s Ogden Point, now that the industry is rebounding from the pandemic, says the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority’s chief executive.

_________________________

Ogden Point saw a total of 329 cruise-ship visits this year, up from the previous record of 257 in 2019, Robertson said. “It’s been a great year.”

The first ship to arrive in Victoria — and in Canada — after the pandemic-imposed break was the Koningsdam with the Holland America line, which pulled in to Ogden Point on April 9.

Ships brought in a total of 715,000 passengers this season, up from 709,000 in 2019, and Robertson predicts 2023 will be “another record year.”

Cruise lines are already planning for 340 ship visits in 2023, he said. “I think we will nudge that one-million passenger mark next year.”

Robertson is also anticipating that the cruise-ship season will continue to run longer than in the past.

Hold on a second.

Isn’t it around 500,000 who disembark?

Typically, about 85% of passengers disembarked pre-COVID but with that high percentage of ships coming at 8 pm, it is likely much lower. Harbour authority still collects the tariff whether the passenger disembarks or not.
