I did indeed once ask that question, but because I'm now very senile I forgot that I later answered the question myself back in 2019.

Crikey, and senile old Sparky even chimed in with a ship sighting but I have no recollection of that, either. We really are a bunch of senile old farts. I don't know how we're going to get through another 20 years of doing this.

First, we must get through the first 20.

Let’s call it a hybrid haha. Way more my style, maybe they’d let me cover a shift.

I'm certainly no ship's captain nor am I a cruise line executive but I was wondering maybe if it could proceed to its next port rather than sitting in one place for several hours.

Apparently the captain was reading this message board. And apparently he also enjoys screwing with people.

"Okay, so we've been idling offshore of Sequim for an entire evening and through the night. What else can we do to really take this cruise up a notch?"

Nah, I kid. I'm sure this was all planned. But it still seems a bit goofy to me.

At least they're getting some great weather, clear views of the Olympics, etc. Imagine if it was pouring rain the whole time.

Hard to conceive when she was built and launched in 1998 the Grand Princess was the largest cruise ship in the world; today she's not even in the top 60 largest such vessels.

You never know what you're going to see from a cruise ship including this shot taken today from the Holland America Eurodam transitting the Juan de Fuca Strait. A USN Trident-class 'boomer' outward bound on patrol. That's one hell of a lot of firepower packed into that hull.

Huge crowds down at the breakwater/cruise terminal today with these three big girls in town - Norwegian Joy, Ruby Princess and Quantum of the Seas L-R respectively. I've been aboard "Joy" as a guest and she is gorgeous but crikey "Quantum" is one big ship seen close up. She's something like 5x the GWT of Titanic for comparison sake.

That said a quick check shows the astounding recent developments in ship design and technology innovation: barely eleven years ago when "Quantum" was launched in 2014 she was the biggest cruise ship in the world at 168,xxx tons - today she is tied with her two sisters for barely 29th place which is pretty astounding. The Joy incidentally is less than 1000 tons less than QOTS, and comes in at the 33rd largest cruise ship on earth.

Wowza. Passengers and crew must be close to 20,000 people between the three of them, if not over.

Know it all.

We stayed for dinner at the Breakwater Cafe then drove along and through the waterfront via James Bay past the Leg and harbour and Empress on our way home. The entire area from the cruise ship terminal right through to Wharf St  and beyond was jammed with pedestrians. Took over 25 minutes to get to the JSB. I haven't seen anything like that in a very long time in the d/t core but business for small shops and restaurants must've been good.
