I heard that CARSA didn't get as much funding as it expected and was now over budget - any confirmations?

I had read they had hoped for more P3's and partnerships/sponsors. But not sure how far a shortfall that left.

Still cheaper to build than the new JS Bridge.
The projected cost for CARSA is $77 million, with $67 million funded by the university, parking revenues and membership fees.

The expansion of the Continuing studies building hit a snag today, literally...:http://www.uvic.ca/h...ure-17mar15.php

I've never understood why students are required to pay for part of the athletic buildings, at least at many Canadian universities.
The students don't get hit up for any other building on campus (except they pay for the Student Union building). They aren't asked to pay for the library, or a new engineering building.
The students usually vote about their participation, but most of the students who vote will be gone before the facility is complete, so they just leave the debt/legacy for future students.

While I don't really mind paying a bit to cover the construction of recreation facilities, often these facilities are benefiting a very few people on campus. As an alumni of one of the most if not the most sport facility invested universities, I rarely used the facilities that we had.
That being said I do recognize the role of the university in operating these facilities, in addition to the medical center and bamfield marine sciences.

Re the climbing wall, they didn't build it all the way up the tower as they had intended. Guess they ran out of money. also since when do climbing walls go in at higher levels instead of overhanging? That is quite unsafe if they will allow any leads.
Wait...they didnt build the climbing wall all the way up
That's ridiculous. It'll just be a large open space where clearly it is suspposed to go.
Sad.

Perhaps they'll extend it at some point.
Know it all.

A lot nicer. If anyone is interested, there is a community open house May 2 and 3. Can try out various programs for free.

That is one_fine looking facility; nice to see "real" stadium-style seating too instead of the old benches a la the McKinnon Gym. I hope alumni can also use it. We used to have access to the weight room and other amenities but I haven't taken advantage of them in recent years. Light years ahead of where the Athletics facilities were in the 80's (and they weren't too shabby at that time)...whew.

Grand opening of UVic’s Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities
UVic is proud to open its first new athletics and recreation facility in 40 years as the university’s centre for active and healthy living, and to support student athletes to train and compete at the highest levels.
The Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA) is centrally located on campus providing the equivalent space of three football fields for athletics and recreation programs, as well as the new home for CanAssist, an innovative program that develops technologies, programs and services for people living with disabilities.
“What we offer here in CARSA is a hub for sports excellence, physical activity, healthy living and wellness for everyone,” says UVic President Jamie Cassels. “This is an inclusive, one-of-a-kind facility: a home to champions, a resource to the wider community and a place where aspiration transforms into achievement.”
The multi-level building includes a huge multi-purpose field house with flexible space for court sports, a two-level fitness and weight training area, the 16-metre Peninsula Co-op Climbing Centre and bouldering area, squash and racquetball courts, studios for yoga, dance, spin and TRX classes and a 2,100-seat performance gym, which will officially open later this summer.
CanAssist will benefit from a doubling of its current space for labs, offices, a customized machine shop and community meeting room.
