Local businessman and economist Rob Wickson will be standing as an Independent candidate for election to Saanich Council this November. This announcement will add considerable interest to the local campaign.

Rob Wickson is a partner in Discovery Economic Consulting, a consulting firm that provides economic advice to the legal community. He combines experience in the private, public and academic sectors. He graduated from the University of Victoria with a double major in Economics and History in 1983.

For the past ten years he has been the Treasurer of the Gorge Tillicum Community Association and is currently President of the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society. He has been an active member of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce since 1990, holding the positions of Chair of the Environment and Transportation Committees before taking over as President in 2000. He was also member of the board of the BC Chamber of Commerce and elected Chair in 2006.

A passionate advocate of environmental and sustainability issues, his previous positions include Chair of the City of Victoria’s Transportation Advisory Committee, Director of the Victoria Green Challenge Society, Director of Smart Growth BC, Treasurer of the Spectrum Job Search Centre and President of IslandTransformations.Org. Rob has also been a member of several citizen advisory committees working with the Capital Regional District on the Regional Growth Strategy.

Rob Wickson said,”I have decided to run for office for Saanich Council because I believe Saanich must be the leader in sustainable growth, environmental stewardship and promoting healthy lifestyles. Opportunities which would improve the quality of life and bring benefits to Saanich are passing us by and going to other parts of the region while Saanich, the largest Municipality in the CRD, absorbs the additional costs for regional growth. If we continue down this path, our wonderful quality of life will continue to be adversely affected. It is my hope that we can all work together while keeping in mind our responsibility in preparing our community for future generations.”

Rob Wickson's campaign will focus on leadership around the new realities of transportation and land use, affordable housing, the value of local community associations, fiscal, environmental, and social sustainability, environment and agricultural land reserve protection and accountable and effective local governance.

Well, we have completed the 3-week tour of Saanich. It has been an exciting experience. I have met many new friends at the All Candidate forums and many more as I walked through the neighbourhoods delivering my rack card.

The debates are over for now, but there is one more important task and that is to make sure to get out and vote. I ask that all of you talk to your friends and neighbours to encourage them to do the same.

Lastly, I am profoundly grateful for all of the support and encouragement I have received over the past 4 weeks. Teams of folks helped deliver over 18,000 rack card and another team worked to get my signs up and keep them up through the weekly storms. We now have a clear understanding of the strength and effort required to be successful in the election process.

Thank you.

Rob
