Meh...compared to the absolute roasting and muckraking they are routinely subjected to by the Brit media this is much ado about nothing IMO. I'm sure if the family or especially their security detail was remotely concerned they would re-locate them. More typical FB poster "outrage" over nothing.

"leave the poor people alone" also might be more apt for the actual family as they had no choice.  but markle accepted the attention.

(If you’re hiking on Horth Hill and you find yourself passing Prince Harry, will you really keep quiet about it?)

Methinks this is classic Victoria. Many people will freely admit that they've never been to Fisherman's Wharf or that they don't know where the Selkirk waterfront is. Yet mention "Horth Hill" re: a possible celebrity sighting and everyone is jumping in their cars and heading out to find it? When I first saw that seemingly phony place name I was actually wondering if the whole story might be fake and if these vacationing royals were just doubles while the real royals were in Barbados or wherever.

I just don’t want to give directions I assume people who asked for directions are trying to scam me.

I can't fathom the crazy people saying local media should have sat on the story like it was the D-Day preparations. But if they're doing a ribbon-cutting, which is their only real job, the media is supposed to be out full force.

i think what people are saying is there is not much to gain by releasing the story.  there is not much upside except being first with the story.

I don't even know what this means. Couldn't you say that about any story? What's gained by reporting that Saanich's parks budget is up 3% or that a senior got hit in a crosswalk. It's all news.

the park budget is useful information as you might wonder why your park next door looks good or your property tax bill is high.  directly impacting you.

someone got hit in the crosswalk that's newsworthy because it reminds you to drive more carefully there or walk more carefully.  or that might explain why you saw all those emergency vehicles last night.  after you hear a string of these you might consider contacting the city about lighting or design.  a public safety issue directly impacting you and/or your community.

two celebrities visiting an area of our city on a private holiday is not news that's useful to you or the community.  and it has all the downside of bringing attention they are seeking to avoid.  it WILL bring at least some people out looking for them.  the only entity gaining by this story is the tc.  and based on the overwhelmingly negative feedback you have to wonder if it was worth the ill will they have received.

from the piece the publisher wrote defending publishing the original article:

Dave Obee: People in Greater Victoria have proven to be respectful about celebrities who pop in for a visit. We let them enjoy their time here, and do what we can to make their visits more enjoyable. That means leaving them alone, even when they are royals.

it seems an odd way to "leave them alone" by publishing fairly specific details of the area they are staying in.

This is turning into very bad PR for Victoria.

But if there is a silver lining to all of this, the combined intelligence of The Sun's press room is about equal to that of a peanut, so the Horth Hill area British Colombia might throw off their readership for a while.

According to Page Six, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex wanted to eat out at the swanky waterfront restaurant Deep Cove Chalet in the popular Horth Hill area of British Colombia.

I mean 98% of us didn't even know Horth Hill exists, but apparently it's very popular.

They shouldn't be hounded or harassed but the TC's respectful reporting is wholly appropriate in every way.

The idea that our news media should suppress a legitimate story in the public interest is puzzling. Once word started circulating the media have an obligation to say something. The only legitimate discussion is the way they report it.

other media do not see it your way.  black press has been silent.  the chek news story gives no specific locations.

the tc could have simply left out horth hill and it'd probably be ok.  just say "the peninsula".  by giving out details of them jogging etc. it's pretty clear they are overnighting in that immediate area.

We were approached by someone with information about Harry's whereabouts well ahead of any other outlet, or at least well ahead of them publishing the information. We passed on it.

like exact addresses or building/business names of crime or disturbance scenes.

yesterday:

Victoria police said officers were called to the 700-block of Pandora Avenue just after 6 p.m. on Christmas evening for a report of an armed person causing a disturbance.

______________________

When officers arrived at the scene, the person had barricaded themselves in a suite in a multi-unit residential building.

would it kill them just to say the address or that it's a cool aid building or just that it's "supportive housing"?  or a rental building rather than a condo at least?

Did anyone actually see the Royals in North Saanich or is this whole story based on some security guys calling the Deep Cove Chalet? A ruse perhaps?
