Vic News:

Also going to public hearing Nov. 27 will be a development variance permit for a 44-unit supportive housing complex at 950 Humboldt St. The provincially-funded project, announced in January alongside a new Ellice Street emergency shelter, was originally planned for 53 units but the architects couldn't make that number work on the site.

I believe they couldn't fit in the extra units because it would have required a rezoning, rather than a simpler variance permit.

I am sure that will be comforting to the 11 people who get to remain homeless as a result. Fairfield Neighbourhood Association could, if they wished, come out in support of a rezoning, and I am sure that with their help the architect would be brave enough to apply for the whole 55.

It must be nice to know you hold the lives of 11 people in your hand. I wonder what they will do with that power? I know what I would do.

I guess the other neighbourhoods will have to pick up the slack.

What does Wayne Hollohan have to say about this?

Know it all.

That would be something to ask him on Nov 12th at the Candidates Coffee Lounge Downtown.

I'd like to clarify that the 11 lost units from this project were caused by a restrictive covenant on the property. The neighbouring building has a protected view that imposed a covenant on any future construction on 950 Humboldt.

So the FCA cannot really be blamed here.

Can't seem to find a rendering on the interweb.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen one at all.

What does supportive housing really mean anyway?

Depends on the type, but generally it means that the people in the building have some sort of regular visit by a medical professional of some time and some buildings have onsite staff to handle immediate issues. May also offer services such as counselling, etc.

For example, Our Place has full time security staff, as well as at least daytime nurses and floor managers.
