quite funny indeed. Love how they mention Colwood and Langford would be home of buildings "taller than some of Vancouver's tallest buildings".

Lagoon Estates is apparently concerning some people because of "highrises up to 12 stories tall"

Also interesting to see that the PCC is already talking about welcoming a casino bid in the Crystal Gardens, and Charlayne Thorton-Joe stating that the city would consider it if a proposal comes...

this was the plan from the beginning.

I was and am so sad to see that Breeding Zoo gone. What a gift that was to have in Victoria.

So was the CHEK item just a hit piece or did they bother to get to the heart of WHY these proposals are coming Langwood's way? Did they touch on the implications of densification in the 'burbs, re: the city's future? Did they ponder the possibility that office workers might one day be commuting FROM Victoria to the suburbs, instead of the other way?

Victorians need to drop the comic book level thinking. It's time to seriously analyze what's happening. Standard issue CHEK/TC fluff just isn't doing it anymore.

CHEK and the TC have never done "it." Fear-mongering, sensationalism and outright lies, that's the CHEK/TC duo for you.

It was a slow news day so they rehashed months old storeys. If it irks at least one Victorian who knows what's really going on then they've done their job.

I got called into a big marketing company to do a paid round table talk on local media, mainly tv news. Pretty much everyone complained check only did boring feel good local fluff pieces, and would barely touch on important issues, often only giving a slanted 'scared old lady' view of the situation.

That's a good term for it.

Thanks to you guys I'm now keenly aware of "hunting lodge" architecture and the "scared old lady" attitude of the local media.

The "scared old lady" is great way to phrase it. The media has to keep you riveted. Some things may entertain some people, but things that terrify you have a broader appeal/pull.
Chek 6 is a poor example of news. Apart from Stephen Andrew's bits of A-Channel, I tune out most of the local ramblings.

Even Stephen can nitpick about the silliest things, but I do agree his style of reporting is a cut above anything by our favourite squeeky-voiced reporter, MeRIbeTH BuRtoN.

A news report on A Channel tonight says CH staff have been told the Noon News is dead as of Feb. 2. Some 16 jobs are to go.

CH dropping noon news show

The noon-hour news on CH Vancouver Island is about to end, part of a restructuring the station says will free up resources for other news shows.

CH station manager Rob Eberle said yesterday the last noon news show will air on Feb. 2. No decision has been made on what program will take its place.

Eberle said the end of the show means 12 people will be affected, with five of them losing their jobs. Some bumping will occur and severance packages will be awarded.

Most of the staff affected are technical and support people. But viewers will miss the reporting of Scott Fee and Jenny Matechuk, who worked part time mostly on weekends, but have filled in for vacations and sick leave of senior reporting staff.

Eberle said the audience for the noon news has been weak, and by ending that program the station will put more resources into the 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. news shows.

Richard Konwick, president of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, local 815, said word of the end of the noon news show came as a profound shock.

Konwick said television and television news are in flux right now, fighting off competition from the Internet and specialty cable channels.

"Television is volatile right now," he said. "Anything can happen in the industry." Times Colonist staff

Tomorrow's the last noon newscast. I hope they do a "Gordie Tupper through the ages" segment.

Oops! Double Post!

Oh, well. I'll take advantage of this empty space by noting that in tonight's news they reported an apartment B&E in Cordova Bay when a man woke up and saw a burglar dressed as a clown in his bedroom.

I think if I woke up to see a clown in my bedroom I would spontaneously and violently evacuate my bowels.

Attention News/Business/Entertainment Editors:
CHEK NEWS To Relaunch in September with a Return to Historic Call Letters

VICTORIA, BC, April 24 /CNW/ - Roy Gardner, General Manager, BC Region
for CanWest MediaWorks announced today that CH Vancouver Island will relaunch
its local news programming under the station's historic call letters, CHEK,
effective September 2007. CHEK News will feature an updated on-air visual
identity and will continue to provide local news and information programming.
"Over 50 years ago, CHEK arrived on the scene as the province's first
private broadcaster and we have been a vital part of Victoria's landscape ever
since," said Gardner. "The return to CHEK News is illustrative of our
connection with and commitment to serving our community with the most in-depth
coverage of Vancouver Island's local issues, stories and events."
Nationally, the network currently known as CH will be rebranded under the
E! banner beginning this fall. The network schedule will continue to feature a
mix of primetime network programming and will include the extensive library of
E! content during daytime, late primetime and weekends. Schedule details will
be available in June 2007.

I was watching CH News at 11 last night and the pre-recorded weather bit (that they make out as "live") with Gordie Tuper went blank. They came back on and Jennifer Crosby said they had lost both Gordie's mic and camera, nice try but who are they trying to fool?

Nowadays most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one's mistakes.
