this is a fascinating story out of Vancouver.
Vancouver photographer’s billboards taken down after complaints about being ‘disturbing’
‘Context is everything’ when it comes to understanding these images, says visual art professor Catherine Heard

here is an instagram video with all the works:

^ the narrator though here I think intentionally misses the mark when she suggests a few reasons why the artwork made people uncomfortable and were pulled after only 48 hours. the people appear as if they are dead from drug overdoses. or they look like coroner or crime scene photos. or at least remind us of them. but she never offers that up as at least one reason.

That's the first thing that entered my head--street fatality. But at the same time it reminded me of paintings of dying Christ, particularly the one quoted above.
I think the curator is steering you away a bit from the homeless/drug interpretation which I think is OK because if she went there you know the headline the next day would be "drug addicts on billboards" which I don't think is the main point. I like the ambiguity and what you project on those images depends a lot on your own personal history.
That these people look like they need a shot of Naloxone is the elephant in the room we're all seeing. But I also like that the curator isn't spelling it out for us, we can figure that out on our own without having every possible interpretation spoon-fed to us. Otherwise why look at art at all if it's already been pre-figured out.

unpopular opinion coming up.
i'm glad these portraits were defaced. we have no business holding up these public officials as some type of gods. they work for us. they don't rule over us. it's absolutely wrong that we have public shrines to them.

The faces of provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Dr. Theresa Tam, the chief public health officer of Canada, appear to have been scratched off of a Government Street mural to honour health care workers. The mural, which went up in 2020, was restored last summer after it was damaged with graffiti and offensive comments.
i would expect them to be defaced the same way i would if it was trudeau helps or horgan's face.

Is it wrong to be grateful for the leaders that took this crisis seriously and apolitically as opposed to the unfortunate citizens with leaders that treated Covid like a fake news PR problem?
Yes, in general we should avoid deifying politicians but seriously, you'd rather be governed by Trump, Modi or Bolsonaro right now? Didn't think so.
We criticize them when they screw up, can we not celebrate when they actually do something right?

#1 - these are not politicians. neither are elected.
#2 - it's wrong to put their faces up and expect anything less than what has happened.
would likely be the same results if the faces were Del Manak or Jim Pattison or Duncan Morrison or even Gordie Dodd.
at least the story does not say "police are investigating" as i'd expect them to put as much effort into it as a vandalized bus shelter ad where someone puts a mustache or missing teeth on the model.

I find the same for beer. Fresher if bottled vs canned (though fresher yet if from a freshly tapped keg).

Considering the state of our downtown streets these days, I'd not read anything political at all into this petty vandalism, I certainly don't.
I seriously doubt there was any intent beyond a drunk or drugged out street regular committing one of the many acts of anger against public and private property they commit each day in downtown Victoria.

No, this is a cat and mouse game that's been going on for months. The murals keep getting repainted but the anti-vaxxer kicked it up a notch this time and gouged out the plywood. It'll keep going and going.

I use anti-vaxxer in this case as a catch-all term for the Bonnie Hunter/Tam haters. This isn't about Horgan or Fairy Creek or anything else.
