Bah, I don't know where to put this... I think we might need a need category..

Anyway, this is about some absurd ruling that says under the University Act, you can't fine people for parking offences...

Even Rob Randall said it was kooky, on CFAX today. :)

Yes, this was the first topic we did on the radio today. Eh, what do I know about UVic parking? I said I hate to think what they'd do for library fines. Bruce Carter from the Chamber was more eloquent, saying lawmakers have to sort this out. It doesn't look like the thing that can be worked out at the table. Using the boot seems to make more sense. Towing seems pointless and wasteful.

Here's an article featuring the halfwit who launched the lawsuit over 200 bucks in parking fines. Maybe I shouldn't call him a halfwit for fear of a lawsuit...

Personally, if I was still a student, I'd be pissed off that the university is just going to tow instead of ticketing. I got 2 or 3 tickets during the course of my degree and as a student, I could afford a 25 dollar fine a lot easier than a 150 dollar tow charge.

Rob, on air, questioned whether this would apply broader, like for private (ie. Robbins) lots, but it appears it's just some crazy anomaly with Universities. Is Camosun OK? I think they contract out their parking facilities.

What's next.. locking up students for being late to class? Heaven forbid the student needs to stay a bit later than expected to finish a project, or someone's interview runs too long.

IMO, the action against the owner of the vehicle should not exceed a reasonable loss that UVic might sustain from a parking spot being occupied for longer than it was leased for.

I think most reasonable people return to their car as soon as possible and within the amount of time the spot has been leased for. Sometimes people get sidetracked or whatnot. The loss to the landowner is at most a few dollars.

Removing someone's car without their consent from a lot that is primarily offered for public use is theft. Attaching immobilizing equipment to a wheel is valdalism.

I'd argue that it is technically mischief. The victim's property is not damaged or defaced, but the victim IS deprived of lawful enjoyment of it.

Scroll through here to see how easily "booting" can be misused.

Gordon Head residents are frustrated by the ongoing issue of University of Victoria students and staff taking up their street parking, making even exiting their driveway a dangerous task.

That was the message sent at the open forum before Monday’s council meeting, where a half-dozen residents turned out to speak about the parking issue along part of Edgelow Street and several connecting roads. The residents are requesting residential-only parking to prevent others from clogging up their neighbourhood with vehicles from those trying to dodge the university’s pay parking lots.

“The reason that we want residential parking is because street parking on the northwest end of Edgelow is unavailable from Monday to Friday for residents and their guests,” said Sarah Roberts. “We want residential parking just like the southeast end of Edgelow Street and Dawnview Crescent.”

During the 30-minute forum, residents raised concerns about emergency vehicles, postal workers and family members finding parking in their neighbourhood. They also highlighted a number of safety issues when cars are parked on both sides of the street, including the difficulty of backing out of driveways, playing chicken with vehicles heading the opposite direction and people jaywalking.

Many residents stressed that it isn’t just students who are taking advantage of the free parking on Edgelow and neighbouring streets, noting they’ve seen employees park several cars along the street and then carpool in one to the university.

Yep, more or less an open secret at UVic that Edgelow is the place to park for campus.

How lazy do you have to be to park on Edgelow and carpool to UVic?
