Leopold's Tavern on Yates has drywall up, also some wallpaper. The windows are still largely covered but trades had the door open as a walked by yesterday.

Belleville Watering Hole to add EHT to bills.

Matt.
“We basically have four options. One: lay off staff. Two: increasing pricing. Three: cut back portions. Four: go to this fee,” Chyzkowski said.
Two of these things are like one another.
Lord knows option #3 might lead to less dependence on the very thing this tax is funding...
Isn't this the same as London Drugs' shtick of charging the blank media levy separately? Do they still do that?

clever. his payroll is up a point but he charges a point on the whole bill.
seriously though. it seems a wacky way to do it. just be better. and then charge accordingly.

The government doesn’t want this cost to be shown like that. They’d rather have the business quietly work it in, so I suspect Belleville’s crunched the numbers since the tax was introduced and worked it out as a 1% fee which they’ll now show on each bill.

the first $500k of the payroll is totally exempt.
calculated as 2.925% x (B.C. payroll minus $500,000).
https://www.retailco...-now-in-effect/
so if this employer has a $600k payroll ($50k a month) his tax is only $2925 per year.

Hard to believe the restaurant has such a high payroll but maybe.

Back in the day, the place I worked in the harbour had some massive sales. 7.5 million? Hmm.

In beer sales alone they can easily clear several thousand dollars a day.

i've never run restaurant (unless you count a few months at The Vegetable on Blanshard back in the '70s) , but...
if he is adding 1% to the gross of each bill to recoup a 1% tax on payroll - then unless his payroll = gross sales, this is a cash grab...

i'm not sure it's a "cash grab". people raise their menu prices 1% all the time.
but it's hard to believe he has a staff of 28.5 people on. who knows though. it's just a corny way to do it. i thought petr (floyd's) was the partner here.

Matt, what’s your take on the manpower to run this place? It’s quite a large establishment with the pub side and the diner side. I’ve never seen the kitchen but it must be quite large, no?
Sure, I could see 90 staff. We run with between 30 and 40, and we are “small”.
They are open about 120 hours a week, that’s a LOT of shifts to fill every week. First shift probably 6:30 am unless they have a baker, last one out at 1-2 am. Gross.

If he is attempting to collect $50,000 to repay this tax via a 1% fee, then we can assume this establishment does 5 million in sales annually or about $13,700 a night. So based on Matt’s comment above, that seems possible for the location. 200k per month on wages though...seems steep.
They’d need more like 7.5 million to demand a payroll of 2.5. Which I could see in a large popular restaurant like Cactus club, Milestones, Joe Fortes, etc.
I don’t think this place is that busy year round, but if that payroll is the entire hotel operation than for sure, easily.
The restaurant itself could easily do 4 million a year. It must be bonkers may-October.
Matt.
