Pot will never be legalized here until it is legalized in the USA, or, they remove any objections to us legalizing it.

IOW - ain't gonna happen.

It's that time again!

There have been some very positive events over the past year in the direction of ending the War On Drugs, and it's important to keep the pressure on. To that end, I will be joining some of my libertarian friends at the 4:20 demonstration, dressed in tie and jacket, as representatives of The Establishment. I and my fellow middle-aged, middle-class, suburban-dwelling, white male squares hope you will join us in letting the politicians know that there is support in every sectors of society for ending drug prohibition.

Davek - well who would have thought! Although I guess a libertarian approach would be 'each to his/her own' and all narcotics should be legalized (?)

Keith Martin has introduced several private member bills in the House to decriminalize marijuana possession, and allow for all users to have up to two plants at any one time in production. Granted, most PMBs never go anywhere, except into Hansard, but the issue is being kept alive.

If the California initiative goes through, or gets close, the debate here might enliven and result in a redefinition. Currently with police and courts taking a softly-softly approach to simple possession it's a limbo world between the letter of the law and a cultural shift.

Quite right! Libertarians endorse freedom not only in the economic sphere, but the personal as well. It's part of what separates us from conservatives. Prostitution, drug use, speech, religion, association, sexual orientation... so long as the choices are made by consenting adults and don't violate the rights of others, we reject the notion that the government has anything to say about it. Mind you, this is not to say we endorse drug use, prostitution, etcetera. Very few of us are libertines. ;)

Those crazy kids must be stoned or something, there is already a group of about 30 under the tree at Centennial Square. Aren't they supposed to wait until 4:20pm to light up? Shouldn't they be in school?

Just for fun, SD61 should schedule a pro-D day every 4:20.

I drove by today, had the car windows open by accident.

You're right VHF, many of them did look like they should have been in school...

I'm surprised Chief Graham hasn't planned some sort of mass arrest and ticketing. It would be pretty easy to pen them all into the square with only one exit.

Well it's 4:36, they should all be good and baked by now.

Speaking of baked, if I could stand the smell of pot smoke I can see good money in setting up a baked goods cart at the square on 4:20...

The hot dog vendors must be all over this. Mmm hot dogs.

Nice segment davek.

You can be proud of your son and his crew. I was in television for 8 years and look for things like how low that shotgun mike was held so that it seldom appeared in the shot.

The audio fade in and out and general clarity was good as well.

The topic and discussion was excellent. You and your son make a good team. I'm thinking "syndication"

^ ^ I'm still unclear, was davek the guy in the business suit, or the guy in the green character-suit behind him? :)

Good question. David Killion is the US ambassador to UNESCO, but he doesn't look like the guy in the suit, so I guess he's dressed in green.

Happy 4:20 everybody.

If you want to catch up, I'll be manning the VV booth at Centennial Square starting at 3pm (bring your own rolling papers).

Then I'm off to cover the city in Kony 2012 posters from 7pm until 4am.

I'm not sure I like the fact kids are smoking up en-masse on Hitler's Birthday.

Of all the days of the year they could choose, they chose April 20th? Really?

4:20 was the time the original stoners got out of school and met up to get high. It was a time that became a meme that became a date.

^ To be perfectly accurate 4:20 was the time that the stoners got out of DETENTION. School was usually dismissed much earlier.

Don't ask me how I know this.
