They bought the group or bought some rights to advertise on the group from whoever admins it.

No ads, so that's not it, but maybe in the future?  They have partnered up on a jobs website, so I guess there is value in that?

Yes. It won’t necessarily be advertising like product placements, but more like the link above.

I think they mostly paid, if they paid anything, for the user base.  It's a really great resource for the industry around here!

The NewsGuild of New York went through with its pledge to strike after the two sides failed to reach a deal in marathon negotiations that broke off Wednesday evening. The sides remain far apart on issues including wages, remote work policies and a performance review system, which the union says is racially biased. The current contract expired in March 2021, and the union has accused the company of dragging out negotiations.

The Washington Post plans to institute more layoffs in the first quarter of 2023, publisher Fred Ryan told employees at a town hall Wednesday. The Post recently shuttered its Sunday magazine and laid off its staff as well as its dance critic, Sarah Kaufman.

Ryan said the paper would continue to hire and that headcount would remain about the same. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the Post has lost a half-million subscribers since last January and does not expect to be profitable in 2022.

Brunswick News’ English-language daily newspapers will appear in print just three days a week, starting March 7, according to a Postmedia announcement. Citing the logistical and economic challenges of print and changing reader consumption habits, the move was announced in a note to readers on the websites of the Saint John Telegraph-Journal, Moncton Times & Transcript, and the Daily Gleaner in Fredericton. Print editions will be published Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with the note saying that Brunswick News “will continue to cover the news of our province seven days a week on our website.” Postmedia Network acquired Brunswick News from J. D. Irving in early 2022 for $7.5 million in cash, plus $8.6 million in Postmedia shares.

We're dropping Dilbert from our comics page

We are dropping the Dilbert comic following racist, hateful and discriminatory rants by Dilbert’s creator, Scott Adams. We are not alone in this decision.

^Not sure Dave actually watched the YouTube comments but in any event the author should have known that saying anything evenly remotely controversial these days is an excuse for cancellation.

This is what Shapiro said, and he's right:

Has cancel culture helped disadvantaged groups advance their cause past benefitting their leadership?

Seems to me that instead of discussing our differences and concerns in public to get alternative points of view. people just say things privately now and avoid situations where they might encounter a problem.

Universities were once the place for moral, intellectual courage in this respect. No such environment any more because the inmates now run the institutions. Profs priority is the perceived exhale of tenure so they cowtow. Admins see the financial crisis and prefer tuition to moral courage. I think social media has played a role in this failure.

I don't agree with some of J Peterson's philosophy but I need him in the world to help me find my own boundaries. I also need Hankook (in the TC), and the marxists for the same reason.

“Todd” was originally based on a Dilbert comic, where if I recall correctly Dilbert’s dog was using an online dating site and it said: “they don’t know I’m a dog”.

Postmedia, Toronto Star owner in merger talks

The two media giants have entered into non-binding discussions on options for combining operational assets, according to company officials

Postmedia Network Canada Corp. is a holding company with more than 130 brands across print, online, and mobile platforms, including the Vancouver Sun and The Province in Vancouver, the Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal, The Sun tabloids, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Windsor Star and London Free Press.

Torstar owns the Toronto Star and Metroland Media Group, which has six daily newspapers in Ontario, including the Hamilton Spectator, Waterloo Region Record, Niagara dailies and Peterborough Examiner, as well as more than 60 community news outlets.

"Greater scale" is nonsense since when is bigger better for the consumer especially in this dying media niche? As they have grown and consolidated have Bell, Rogers, Shaw been "better" for consumers?

Torstar hasn't been able to figure out this internet thingy ever since they backed one of the first online internet-driven based companies in Canada, a Victoria firm I happened to work for starting in 1992. It was a hell of ride until it came crashing down in 1996.

After pumping seven million bucks into it Torstar still couldn't figure what they had on their hands or how to make the firm remotely profitable - imagine that we developed and operationalized the first online database and search engines for Employment, Automobile and Real Estate Sales in Canada, and were one of the first to market in North America in all those markets. Sounds radical right? It was in 1992-3 but being a conventional media entity in a legacy industry Toronto just couldn't figure out how to grab that tiger's tail nor would they frankly have known what to do with it even if they had.

Inevitably they pulled out of course when shareholders got restless and the financial pain became too much to bear; so when the last of that tranche cash was gone the gig was up. Fast forward to 2023 and Torstar continues to bleed red ink and have conducted so many rounds of layoffs over the past 20 years its hard to keep up. Somehow this feels almost like a last gasp, hail Mary proposition intended to stave off what feels like an inevitable fate.

The industry is dying in part because FAANG companies, amoungst others, have figured out that they don't have to pay for and can monetize traditional media content for themselves.

Métro Média, a pillar of Montreal local news, is folding due to financial constraints.

According a statement, Métro Média was advised on Wednesday it could no longer continue its operations as its supporting institutions like Desjardins Culture, the economy and innovation ministry, and Investissement Québec pulled out their funding.

Earlier this year, the city banned the Métro newspaper's main mode of distribution, Publi-sacs, pushing the publication to take on a digital transformation.

At the time, Métro Média president Andrew Mulé had said the move would put pressure on the group as it faced cost increases with a change in distribution while being hit with a decrease in revenue — leading to layoffs.

"The fact remains that we couldn't suffer a devastating loss of revenue all of a sudden, and follow an ambitious and expensive digital roadmap without external financial support," said Mulé in a statement Friday.
