The Island Corridor Foundation is touring a rail bus around Vancouver Island.
It was at the Alberni District fall fair this past weekend and it was in Ladysmith on Thursday.
The Foundation hopes the rail bus might generate some interest and ideas about how to revive either a commuter or tourist train on Vancouver Island. ![]()

"He says most of the foundation’s tracks could support the hi-rail bus at a reduced speed of up to 40 kilometres an hour.

A plan to restore rail on Vancouver Island is gaining steam with a new approved motion by Nanaimo City Council.
Nanaimo City Council has unanimously voted to support a plan for transit to connect with the potential return of rail.
“Nanaimo is always described as being long and skinny, and that’s really how it’s laid out. We have this long spine running all the way from north to south in Nanaimo, and so that’s just really a great opportunity for the future when we can take advantage of having rail transportation again,” said Hilary Eastmure, a Nanaimo city councillor.

It's important to keep flogging this dead horse. Just in case.

I didn't realize that there were still trains running in and around Nanaimo.

Just 10 miles of line - from the harbour to a propane distributor. The haul up the hill requires two locomotives to pull four or five propane cars.

The article is poorly written as the motion was for transit hub design along the corridor, not necessarily rail transit transfer hubs. The #70 bus to Ladysmith and Duncan runs every three or so hours, very easily meeting demand.

The region is at a key point in its growth, with residents likely to start asking: “What’s next?” says B.C. Transit’s director of integrated service planning.

“So much has changed since 2011, particularly, you know, the way people are moving around the region,” he said. “I think that there’s an excitement, a strategic urgency that’s in the air with regards to transit and transportation for the region.”
Except that is absolutely not true. The CRD has stats on that. Nothing has changed in 20 years.
