Poor Washington DC:
The District is seriously considering scrapping its current D.C. Streetcar vehicles, just two years after they first carried riders.
[T]he District Department of Transportation said there have been problems already with getting spare parts to complete repairs in a timely manner. One manufacturer is out of business, and the other is overseas, so the issues are likely to continue.
“Long term parts availability will likely require reverse engineering parts,” DDOT officials wrote to the council’s Committee on Transportation and the Environment. The agency said it is exploring a strategy of acquiring vehicles in the future that “considers the feasibility of disposal of the current fleet.”
Long-term budget plans call for at least $25 million in new streetcars to be purchased over several years beginning in late 2020 or early 2021.

DC, you’ve done streetcars. They were nice, they made for good sepia photos for 21st-century hipsters to frame and put in their bathrooms, and everybody appreciated you as historical fact. But they died. they failed. There’s no need to bring them back.

Hey ≈40% of people who are on HW1 at some times, are in busses.
Buses are great, they go lots of places, there are lots of them, the train is useless, unless you have like 25 of them and that's not feasible.

Hey ≈40% of people who are on HW1 at some times, are in busses.
Hmm, I suspect that could be quite high for an estimate. During an average peak period rush there are 6,000 vehicles @ Helmcken westbound between 3PM and 6PM. Even if we count each vehicle as a single individual 40% of that capacity yields 2,400 people, which would require 24 100% full double deckers to pull that off.
Maybe the split is 75/25 but it could be even lower.

Not particularly related to commuter rail in Victoria, but John Horgan and Jay Inslee are set to make an announcement today regarding high speed rail services between Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland.
The Washington State legislature just kicked in some money towards a business case for the project, so this could be a simple announcement of BC throwing some cash into the pot. Inslee is in Vancouver for the GLOBE Forum, so this ties nicely into that.

They would have to build an entirely new rail system tho, the existing passenger traffic goes right through White Rock and has to travel at reduced speeds.

Why rail, and not hyperloop?

Maybe we oughtta wait for California to start operating its $30 billion over budget, decade delayed system and then consider our options?
Just saying.
That's exactly what they plan to do, study that one.

Ya, that's right. And every single day passengers representing $90,000,000 in paid fares leave and arrive at LAX. That's $33B every year.
Just the positive environmental effects of the train is worth the expenditure.
Quite frankly California might not be the best place to do this project, for populations, it makes more sense between Boston, Washington, New York. But what can you do. The latter is more complicated for political reasons.
