Where's the hallmark society protecting this historic dome???
They just built the darn thing...........well, maybe about 25 years ago.

That building has quite a history. A century ago it was a brothel, run by the "unrepentant madam" Stella Carroll.
^ From that link:
She occupied the top two floors of the Duck Block building on Broad Street (see below for present day tours). Not long after, she also bought the building at 643 Herald Street, in an area not as “accepting” of brothels than Broad Street. This lead to many police crackdowns, court appearances and trouble with the neighbours.
(Sorry, sounding obtuse here...)
Who would today think of Broad Street as a separate world from Herald Street?
On the other hand, in our contemporary imagination, Humboldt Street is still quite separate from John Street / Rock Bay, right?
I wonder if that separation will look as quaint as the one between Broad and Herald Streets one day...

I visited the motel section (mid-1990's) to inquire for a friend who was coming to town. It was clean, comfortable and a little hokey with "thrift store" furniture. The woman who showed me around was charming. When I told my friend about the place, she was horrified that I would recommend a place run by East Indians. I was horrified at her prejudice, something she had not revealed before.
Bye bye Taj Mahal.

This is really interesting. Not sure how, exactly, but it has something to do with spatial relations, and how residents "build" imaginary spatial relationships, which they fix as mental maps, and consider permanent.

Spacial relationship change over a short period of time. Before I left Montreal I went back to all the places I had lived (we were renters) to document them. Places that had seemed so far from one another, on a later visit now seemed so close.
Also I imagine that as the perimeter of Victoria expands the core gets more intense, more squashed together.
Humbolt Street will soon become a stone's throw from John Street (well-named).
Now who is being obtuse?

I like this pithy response, indicating neglect piled upon apathy.
