As Minneapolis burns, Twitter has censored the following Tweet from Trump due to “glorifying violence.”

....These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!

Well, I don't know if censored is the precise word. The tweet was always there, you just had to read the warning and click "view" to see it. But no question Twitter did directly interfere with its dissemination by doing that. That's an amazing thing. After all, tweets from that account are considered official White House statements. And many of those official statements appear on that account and nowhere else.

A fascinating escalating feud between two very powerful people.

Well there's that, and the fact you can't like/comment/share it. I'd say that's censorship.

@Jack got played. He did exactly what Trump wanted him to do.

Ah, I did not see that. No likes, no sharing, no commenting. Incredible. I think Jack holds the power still. Trump has a long track record of impotence when it comes to threats. All talk no action. It's hard to know if Trump is really upset with this. We do know he relishes fights like this. His whole life it's been his favourite pastime--bashing it out publicly with other famous people.

His mega-yacht bored him. His wives bore him. His grandchildren bore him. Throwing gas on a fire is the only thing that amuses him.

Trump should take his ball and go play elsewhere. Reddit perhaps  .

Yes, that could be right.

The question now is will people side with a US president, dislike him they might, or with a billionaire tech guy who needs them to make his billions, and who they've just realized controls what they see and don't see.

This'll get interesting.

@Lanforod, that would be quite the thing. Twitter's popularity exploded when Trump began to use it as his primary platform. If he walks away, huge volumes of people from around the world will follow and spend time engaging wherever he posts.

Hmm, it's looking now like censoring Trump could be related to a potential investigation into Twitter willingly supplying Iranian officials with access to the Twitter platform, despite that contravening sanctions.

I doubt Trump would enjoy communicating in an echo chamber of sycophants. He relishes the battles. He needs people to joust against. It's what fuels him.

But this is the crazy thing right? Twitter was invented so ordinary people could share banal details about their life, "Hey, I'm walking down the street to get a sandwich!". But now it's become the official statement platform for many international governments. We have yet to figure out the rights and responsibilities of the government and the platform.

Does he even respond to people's posts? It's more about his own broadcasts, it seems. And that can come from anywhere and it'll get picked up instantly and re-broadcast.

The thing about Trump and Twitter is he used the platform to pioneer direct-to-the-public messaging. Prior to Trump doing it, I can't think of many elected officials announcing major news direct to the public. The media hates that, of course, as they're not the ones getting the attention. They have to copy and paste into their content what the public has already consumed direct from Trump.

Ah, I see we cross-posted.

Yes indeed it has become that. And that's because of Trump. The entire world's establishment followed in his lead to cut through the press and direct broadcast via Twitter.

Trump earlier today following Twitter's censorship of his post: “Twitter is doing nothing about all of the lies & propaganda being put out by China or the Radical Left Democrat Party. They have targeted Republicans, Conservatives & the President of the United States. Section 230 should be revoked by Congress. Until then, it will be regulated!”

“Regulate Twitter if they are going to start regulating free speech.” @JudgeJeanine @foxandfriends  "Well, as they have just proven conclusively, that’s what they are doing. Repeal Section 230!!!"

@Jack messed up here. Even Zuckerberg is distancing himself from the Twitter drama.

"however, *Twitter has determined* that it may be in the public's interest for the tweet to remain accessible"

Once upon a time someone on the left would have had a problem with this statement. Strange times

The evolution of Twitter from a public MSN Messenger to a full-blown propaganda machine is quite something.

As do millions of Twitter’s users. That’s at the core of the issue, that they don’t appear to be censoring their users on fair grounds.

Trump’s tweet was bait and @Jack ate it up.

Most of those twitter users get banned, actually.  They appear to have made an exception for Trump, though.  Which is sad, since he should have been banned many years ago.

No, they don’t.

That awful comedienne who held up a bloodied fake decapitated head of Trump is still putting out cringeworthy content.

Twitter also loves it when millions of people check Trump’s account every hour. It’s a huge boon to their business.
