Meta launches paid verification system for Canadian users

https://www.cbc.ca/n...anada-1.6860604

Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, is launching a test of a new verification system in Canada, one that costs up to $19.99 a month for a version of the app that comes with enhanced features.

The company says that starting now, it is testing out what it calls a "subscription bundle" for both apps that not only verifies a user's identity via government ID, it also unlocks various support services for creators.

Anyone with an Instagram or Facebook account is eligible to sign up, but they must by over 18 and businesses are exempt. The app-based version will cost $19.99 a month, while a web-based version will cost slightly less, at $15.99.

Canada is just the latest country to be added to the service, as it was launched in Australia and New Zealand in February, followed by the U.S. in March and U.K. users earlier this month.

As a monthly cost, Facebook is worth about $20 less than this.

Businesses are exempt?

Facebook must have lost some talent in recent years. They keep tripping over themselves.

Facebook will let U.S., other countries access Canadian news after it blocks Canada

A resident of Niagara Falls in New York would be able to read Facebook posts by Canadian news organizations while those living across the border in Niagara Falls, Ont., would not

Almost sure most Canadians do not care.

Also, Niagara Falls NY sucks.

Meta's head of public policy in Canada says there are no talks underway with the federal government on the new online streaming law and the social media giant is moving on its threat to drop Canadian news from its platforms.

"We are proceeding towards ending the availability of news permanently in Canada," Rachel Curran told Power & Politics on Tuesday.

Yesterday CBC had an article that said the feds were negotiating with Meta. Now that article is gone.

I suspect the feds are realizing the industry is no longer sustainable and they want the platforms to further subsidize the organizations. They are also realizing that the media is no longer as strong of a messaging ally as it was even five years ago. Who takes the CBC seriously on any political or social commentary? People realize how their own experiences are not aligning with what the media is saying (the streets are getting safer; carbon taxes make life more affordable; masks, vaccines, scientific dogma that keeps changing, etc).

People may not always pay attention, but the public isn’t stupid.

Any tips where I can get Canadian news once Facebook doesn’t feature or promote it? Seems hard.

The media has historically played a critical role in supporting the cognitive dissonance.

Interestingly, the media is not reporting on how Bill C-18 is going to affect the industry, who it does or doesn't affect, in terms of businesses and 'media' outlets, and how far reaching the social media platform response may be.

Why is this issue so suppressed? Where is the rush of headlines, the deep dives and investigative reporting on this issue? It affects all Canadians who consume news via the Internet, but we're getting hardly any details from the very organizations that we turn to for information on this just like this.

It’s likely partially because Facebook et al has not said how they plan to do things, just like they never tell us how they operate in general. They reserve the right to keep us in the dark.

Sure, I can accept that. I am finding it very difficult to even understand what organizations C-18 targets. The press isn't telling us. At the very least they can explain the spirit of the bill and who/what it targets, not who the social platforms will target.

Is this solely for accredited media? Is this for accredited media (CTV) and unaccredited media (Rebel News)? Is this for accredited media and unaccredited media and trade publications? Is this for accredited media and unaccredited media and trade publications and special interest publications? Is this for accredited media and unaccredited media and trade publications and special interest publications and independent blogs?

If we're on the precipice of something monumental, shouldn't the press be trying to get to the bottom of this? Or are they disinterested, because they know it impacts them, and they don't care about other organizations that get caught up in this? There are thousands of businesses in Canada that may be impacted by this, and which are not accredited media or even unaccredited media, per se.

It's so bonkers to have virtually no information.

I don’t even understand what the general beef is.

The TC, or CBC, or Capital Daily or Victoria Buzz all post their stories online on FB. Usually just the headline or whatever the platform picks up when you drop in a URL to your news site. The idea being that people will then come across it and share it, then others will also click it. And go through to the website.

Are the news sites pissed that others also post more than just the headline (which of course does happen, we do it here, but we limit the amount of text we quote, and always post a link)?

It’s hard for me to figure.

Postmedia has publicly praised the legislation. I’ve not heard of many others doing the same.

The National Post posted 55 of their articles on Facebook today:

The TC posted 14, including one they tagged as a paid partnership:

If they want FB to pay, why are they posting for free?
