Falcon Heavy is the world's "most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two," SpaceX says on its website. That’s thanks to the fact it uses three Falcon 9 boosters to give it a massive 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff. Shortly after launch, two of those boosters descended back to Earth for a tandem landing in what has become an iconic representation of SpaceX’s engineering capabilities.

In its live stream, SpaceX pointed out that the tandem landing constituted the 150th and 151st successful landing of an orbital-class rocket. SpaceX says on its website it was the first launch and landing of these specific boosters and that they "will be prepared for re-flight on a future U.S. Space Force mission later this year." The central booster will not be reused, however, as it performed a planned reentry and fell into the ocean.

SpaceX launched the second of two satellites for Eutelsat Nov. 3 to replenish one of the largest broadcast systems in Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa.

A Falcon 9 carrying the Hotbird 3G satellite for the French operator lifted off at 1:22 a.m. Eastern from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The all-electric satellite separated from the rocket in geostationary transfer orbit about 35 minutes later.

According to Eutelsat, Hotbird 3G was successfully initialized over a three-hour period to begin making its way to its orbital slot at 13 degrees west with onboard propulsion.

The Falcon 9’s first stage successfully landed on a SpaceX drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean for reuse shortly after the launch.

The booster has been used in six other SpaceX missions, including cargo and crew deliveries to the International Space Station, launching a Turkish satellite, and a batch of spacecraft for the Starlink broadband constellation.

NASA's "mega moon rocket" is back on the launch pad.

The Space Launch System, or SLS, is the space agency's newest and most powerful rocket to date and will return astronauts to the moon at some point in 2024 or 2025 as part of the Artemis program.

The rocket began rolling out of the massive vehicle assembly building at 11:16 p.m. ET Thursday, almost 45 minutes ahead of schedule.

The first launch attempt is planned for Nov. 14, at 12:07 a.m. ET. There are two other launch windows — where the Earth and moon are in the right position for the mission — on Nov. 16 at 1:04 a.m. ET and on Nov. 19 at 1:45 a.m. ET.

The launch was supposed to take place on Aug. 29 but was scrubbed after a few issues that included a hydrogen leak. A second launch attempt occurred on Sept. 3, but once again, a hydrogen leak forced NASA to call it down. Though the space agency was hoping for a third attempt in September, Hurricane Ian forced them to roll the rocket back to the vehicle assembly building.

We’re sending science, technology, and supplies to the International Space Station—and you’re invited to watch the launch!

On Sunday, Nov. 6, at 5:50 a.m. EST, Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus spacecraft will launch 8,265 pounds of cargo aboard an Antares rocket from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia. The spacecraft, dubbed the “S.S. Sally Ride” after the late NASA astronaut and educator, will spend about two days in orbit before arriving at the space station on Tuesday, Nov. 8. This is the 18th Northrop Grumman commercial resupply services mission as part of NASA’s Commercial Resupply Program.

The Cygnus spacecraft carries scientific investigations on 3D printing of knee cartilage, plant mutations, and mudflow structure—along with a demonstration of camera technology and small satellites from Japan, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is ready to launch its first satellite, ZimSat-1, into orbit next month after developing it through the BIRDS project. The launch is a milestone that will enhance mineral exploration and monitoring of environmental hazards and droughts. Additionally, it will aid in mapping human settlements and disease outbreaks, among other capabilities.

ZimSat-1, a nanosatellite, will deploy from the Japanese KIBO Module after nearly a year-long delay caused by Covid-19. The satellite is a 1U educational and amateur radio mission CubeSat manufactured under the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan. Many experts consider the programme the first baby steps of the country’s fledgling space programme.

Uganda is planning to launch its first satellite into low Earth orbit in September 2022. Uganda’s finance minister, planning and economic development, Matia Kasaija, said in a statement that the launch will be in collaboration with NASA.

Kasaija made this statement on Tuesday while reading the country’s budget speech at Kololo Independence Grounds.

“In September this year, Uganda will launch into the Lower Earth Orbit its first-ever satellite from the International Space Station in collaboration with the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA),” the minister said.

He added that data from the PearlAfricaSat-1 satellite will be received by a ground station in Mpoma, Mukono, and will be utilised for a variety of purposes, including meteorology, environmental monitoring, urban planning, mineral exploration, and disaster management.

A Northrop Grumman capsule delivered several tons of supplies to the International Space Station on Wednesday despite a jammed solar panel.

The shipment arrived two days after launching from Virginia. Only one of the cargo ship’s two round solar panels opened following liftoff. Flight controllers tried in vain to open the stuck panel, but managed to draw enough power for the flight with just one.

As the capsule made its slow approach, the space station crew took pictures so engineers might understand what went wrong. NASA astronaut Nicole Mann then used the station's robot arm to grab the spacecraft, dubbed the S.S. Sally Ride in honor of America's first woman in space.

Cool!

UVic satellite mission blasts into space

Tomorrow, Alex Doknjas is one of two recent University of Victoria engineering graduates on site at Kennedy Space Center in Florida to witness the launch of a lifetime.

The UVic team’s ORCASat project is at the forefront of modern space research: on Nov. 22 at 12:54 p.m. PST, UVic’s miniature satellite is scheduled for lift off with NASA's SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Built by the diverse ORCASat team of UVic engineering students and scientists led by Canada Research Chair and UVic aerospace systems engineer Afzal Suleman, it will rendezvous with the International Space Station then be deployed to collect data for 18 months.

The UVic satellite won a national competition, the Canadian CubeSat Project (CCP) by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and, as a result, is one of two post-secondary projects from Canada chosen to be part of this week’s launch. Once set in orbit around our planet, ORCASat will provide a unique artificial star reference for ground-based telescopes, helping contribute to the precise calibration of space instrumentation that measures the brightness of stars and supernovae.
