It was the commission-based salesman at the welding supplies store.
Makes sense I suppose, the moon is an arc shape some nights and that is a form of welding.

That same salesman sold me an umbrella to protect me from the meteor shower.

Aren't you supposed to stand facing the opposite direction and look at the object in a mirror?
I think that's the safest way. That technique worked out well for Perseus.

Close Grouping of the Moon, Venus, and Mars...
I almost missed this as the clouds started rolling in just minutes after I took some shots. After dinner at Lure we noticed several folks outside taking pictures of the moon with whatever devices they had. It was quite the scene and apparently this alignment will only be visible tonight. I didn't have my point and shoot with me (never again) but luckily I was close to home. Here are some shots from a few different spots.

As a follow-up to last night's shots, as predicted by the astronomers, the tight grouping has not lasted. While the two planets (Mars is the dim one) still appear close together, the Moon has left the party. I'm experimenting a bit with the camera's 16:9 apsect ratio. If you view the first and third shots in flickr, it will fill your widescreen.

Set your alarm early Saturday morning and grab your best binoculars to catch what NASA calls the shortest total lunar eclipse in a century, lasting only a few minutes in most places.
Parts of the eclipse will be visible throughout Canada, but some areas will only be able to catch a quick glimpse of a partial eclipse, according to Randy Attwood, executive director of the Royal Astronomical Society.
However, even viewers in B.C. will have a short period to view the actual eclipse itself. Around 3:00am
"This one is just barely going 100 per cent into the Earth's shadow, [and it's] only totally immersed in Earth's shadow for four minutes," Attwood said.
The appearance of a total lunar eclipse has led to its nickname — blood moon — as "when the moon is fully in the shadow, it could take on an orange-ish or red colour," says Attwood.

The Moon rise on the day after...
There are tricky shots to take as you lose Moon detail if you expose to have the city lights look good. The solution is an exposure bracketed set of shots and an HDR composite. I'll have to try that next time.

Beyond Pluto? In another star system? Earth 2? This could be big news, but Trump being well....Trump will likely still get all the media attention. We live in a strange world.

That's over 8 quadrillion miles away. We won't be probing it for life any time soon.
