Nparker, I agree that the junos should be self-supporting and while we're at it, let's eliminate CanCon and make the CBC self-supporting. The taxpayer shouldn't be on the hook for any of those things.

I am with you 100%.

If they bring a net gain for the City, I'm game. :)
Nowadays most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one's mistakes.

If the Juno's celebrated the best in **rno musicians I would still want them in Victoria. We are a tourism and convention city we should actively encourage them here even with city money as there is a return on that money.

Victoria appears to be the only Canadian city that hasn't hosted these awards so it's safe to say it'll happen eventually. We're talking about the Juno awards after all, not the Commonwealth Games.

It makes sense to shoot for the 2014 awards--by that time the west coast will be due again. Vancouver did 2009, St. John's gets 2010, then it will probably go to Ontario etc.

A study is being done that will be made public in a few months. This will shed light on what needs to happen to pull this off.

A big issue is SOFMC. It only seats about 5,000 and usually the Junos take place in larger venues like GM Place or the Saddledome. However, this may play to our advantage. Vancouver didn't even come close to selling out even with reduced ticket prices and we can promise a good crowd. Events like this that are a big yawn in the big cities are a big deal here.

We may even do what they did in Vancouver and tent off a Downtown street and have a street party.

Victoria needs a new current cultural event. One like the Junos which would bring us global attention would be perfect. Considering how much arts funding is being cut here, hosting an event of this calibre gives hope to aspiring artists. And really what defines a "sell out"? If it's someone who is lucky enough to make a decent wage and get some funding and publicity out of their chosen field of employment then sign me up!

All eyes will be on St. John’s, Nfld. this spring when the Maritime city hosts the annual Juno Awards, a week-long celebration of Canadian music.

“I think there is an enormous opportunity to do this,” Coleman said, noting St. John’s and Victoria are comparable in population and have similar arena seating capacity.

How come in Victoria these sorts of population comparisons only seem to work in one direction (down)? The population of St. John's is about half the population of Victoria. So if a city that's half Victoria's size is comparable to Victoria, then doesn't that also mean that a city that's twice Victoria's size is comparable to Victoria?

Anyway, St. John's has already hosted the awards recently so it's not like there's some uncertainty about whether it can be pulled off successfully.

Methinks the telling statistic here is that Victoria's arena is the same size as the arena in St. John's (half the size of Victoria), whereas Saskatoon (smaller than Victoria), Halifax (same size as Victoria), and Winnipeg (twice the size of Victoria) all have significantly larger facilities.

In terms of the Juno's the comparison is a bit silly. Newfoundland and Labrador only has a population of 500,000 and we have 700,000 on the Island and another couple million a 1.5-hour ferry ride away. When there is a concert here, and the same band has not been in Vancouver and/or Seattle on the same tour, I run into lots of fans from those cities.

That'd be awesome!!! Maybe Chad Kroeger will get blitzed at my pub, get busted for drunk driving and then be forced to play the Game of Death that are the holding cells at VicPD HQ.

Or even better, I could punch him in the face for being so, so incredibly lame. Even lamer than how they came up with their name: http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Nickelback (for an even better laugh, scroll down to Criticism. "Are there any Nickelback fans out there? Are you sure?")

BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Oh good, we will need some catalyst for protesters to amalgamate around, what with the Olympics long gone.

News Release

Public Input Invited on Capital Region JUNO Award Bid: Survey @ http://www.victoriamusicawards.com

February 2, 2010 (Victoria)- Local residents, businesses and community organizations are invited to provide their ideas regarding a possible Capital Region bid to host the Canadian JUNO Awards. An on-line questionnaire has been established at www.victoriamusicawards.com to support a local consultation process being led by the Provincial Capital Commission (PCC) and Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA).

"Hosting the JUNO Awards in the Capital Region has the potential to create economic opportunities and showcase Vancouver Island as a significant international cultural tourism destination," said PCC CEO Ray Parks. "Over the past few months, we have been meeting with local stakeholders in the business and entertainment community about this exciting opportunity. Now we need input from the general public."

PCC and DVBA have invited Music BC to prepare a report on the possibility of bringing a future JUNO Awards to the Capital Region. Music BC successfully organized Vancouver’s 2009 JUNO Awards celebration. The responses to this on-line survey will help shape the conclusions of a final report this spring.

The on-line survey includes over 20 questions. Some were identified through an initial phase of local consultation that has taken place with Capital Region community leaders over the fall.

The JUNOs are Canada’s version of the Grammy Awards. They are an annual celebration that originated in 1970 to recognize excellence in the Canadian music recording industry. The JUNOs were an exclusive industry event until a decade ago when they started travelled to different provinces. Since then the JUNOs have become one of the most celebrated annual entertainment events in Canada.

Vancouver hosted the JUNO Awards in 2009. St. John’s, Newfoundland is hosting the celebration for the second time in 2010. The 2006 Halifax JUNOswere hosted by Vancouver Island’s Pamela Anderson and eclipsed the Grammy Awards for TV ratings in Canada.

“In addition to having the infrastructure and volunteer base to host an event of this size, Vancouver Island can proudly boast of a rich musical tradition that includes Nelly Furtado, Diana Krall, David Foster and many others,” said DVBA Chair Scott Hoadley. “We are eager to hear what the public has to say about this opportunity.”

Victoria wants the Juno Awards; questionnaire results reveal support for bid
By Paul Seal, VibrantVictoria.ca
http://vibrantvictoria.ca/?p=2120

Victoria City councillor Chris Coleman is confident Victoria has the ability to pull off a successful Juno Awards, even if he’s unsure if the City will bid for the 2013 or 2014 award show.

A loosely organized committee of local and British Columbia business, industry and government leaders, as well as key organizers of past Juno Awards in Vancouver, closed a four-week online questionnaire process that sampled local reaction to the idea of holding the awards ceremony in Greater Victoria. ^ Only 95%? Why couldn't they just manipulate the survey a little more? Then they could say it was unanimous.
