Chek and CTV Vancouver island are good for local content.
However, if you watch a Chek newscast it is about 10 minutes of their content, then weather and the upside guys for 15 minutes and CBC news stories for the remainder.

Exactly which is why I'll tune in to Vancouver for "local" i.e. BC news (CHEK only very rarely such as the election two nights ago). Beyond that haven't watched it in many years.

I think of it like food preferences. Some families prefer to buy their food ready-made, pre-packaged for consumption, by "professionals" like Campbell's Soup Corporation and HungryMan. While others prefer to gather fresh ingredients from diverse sources and home-cook a meal that, while it takes more effort to make, is healthier and more fulsomely nutritious.

Same goes for news and media consumption. If you've only ever known "'professional" content, then downloading your information and opinions in a neat pre-packaged format seems normal. But if you're savvy, there's a world of flavours and nutrients out there way beyond what the newsroom at BBC can pre-package for your consumption. To each their own.

Interesting analogy although a better explanation IMO is simply 1) "time" and 2) priorities.

If for example you happen to be single, unmarried, have no kids and you don't own your home, you certainly have the time to go in search of non-MSM or television medium news options, and whatever else float's your boat, pretty much to your heart's content. A luxury most folks who fall into that other bucket where some or especially all of those other variables apply, don't generally have. All of the latter - family and home --> read "maintenance and upkeep" which every homeowner understands all too well, are priorities for me.

And "time" is a big factor because after working on and with enterprise system applications for nearly 40 hours a week in addition to paying attention to my spouse and kid and home and property - someone always need a ride, a favor, something picked up or dropped off and a home *always* ensures there is a fence to build or a wall to paint, leaves to rake etc., - I'm lucky if I have the energy to watch ye olde TV for 10-15 minutes by the end of the day before collapsing into sleep. Never mind spending yet more hours searching for online alternative news sources which in my average day isn't anywhere near a priority.

In general it's also accurate to say that as a rule I wouldn't know too much about pre-made food other than the very occasional pit stop for a subway sandwich or mcd's filet o fish: tonight's dinner wasn't atypical - a from scratch turkey tetrazini, a from scratch spinach salad and leftover from scratch pumpkin pie made on the weekend, for dessert. In addition to being pretty 'savvy' with technology, since I've worked with it every day for 30+ years, I'm also a very good cook.  :)

Scott Fee is gone as news director at CHEK, no reason provided but since he apparently wants to remain local it sounds like his choice to embark on a career switch, which isn't really that surprising.

Traditional TV and especially radio are having great difficulty navigating this age of online news content streaming/consumption/viewing/cloud etc. As younger folks move in to eventually usurp boomers who are aging out as the dominant demographic, its pretty obvious those people who grew up surrounded by 'tech' will only accelerate the trend away from 'traditional' TV and radio.

My friend Tom Jeffries, very well known ex-CFUN rock jock in the 70's and 80's, later an ex-CKNW talk radio host, also featured on stations in Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax through his long career, has written a book about the (radio) industry that is in process of publication.

It covers his time from the late 60's - he actually started here and worked briefly at CFAX - to 2010 when he retired. In part it will speak to the decline of radio as we knew it in its heyday, and the challenges for those who remain in the industry today - or aspire to it in some fashion - as they grapple with today's changing tech landscape and consumer habits, and somehow try to stay relevant. Looking forward to getting a copy of that for sure.

Putting this item here because Jody co-hosts a show currently broadcast via CHEK.

Jody Vance is a very well known, long time Vancouver radio and TV broadcaster (ex-BCTV, Global, Sportsnet, Vancouver TV, CBC Vancouver, CKNW among others), and finally had her day in court recently where a clearly unbalanced, deranged individual pleaded guilty to criminal harassment spanning a period of many years, for the violent and often sexualized email and text messages he sent to Vance directly, many of her media colleagues and even various guests on her show. I've seen some of the stuff and its pretty vile and grim.

That said he was given only a conditional discharge with twelve months of probation, meaning that if he keeps the peace and is "of good behaviour", no conviction will be entered on his record. Pretty wretched considering the professional damage and humiliation it caused, in addition to the fact he brought her son into these harassing messages by mentioning him by name and threatening 'biblical consequences' for her pandemic reporting on CBC, causing her to fear for her personal and family's safety. She is now pursuing him by filing a civil suit for defamation and invasion of privacy among other charges.

Scott Fee is gone as news director at CHEK

Joe Perkins has taken his place.

Joe Perkins on Twitter: "An update on my role at CHEK News. Today is my first day as News Director at CHEK. We have a great team and I'm excited about this opportunity and the future of our newsroom. I will be stepping away from the anchor desk eventually. Thx for the messages and support. #NewChapter" / Twitter

Paul Haysom heading back to the island to helm the news anchor position at CHEK, from his current Global TV assignment in Vancouver. Joe Perkins, whom Haysom succeeds, was of course previously announced as the new PD at CHEK.

TV in Greater Victoria continues to evolve, with CHEK emerging triumphant

Employee-owned and -controlled, station has fourth-highest viewership in the province, behind only Vancouver stations CBC, Global BC and CTV Vancouver.

The TV landscape in Victoria has dramatically shifted in recent weeks, with changes to CHEK and CTV 2 coming at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Bell Media cut 1,300 positions nationwide in June, as it bowed to rising financial pressure. Those cuts resulted in termination letters to a reported 16 people at Bell-owned CTV 2 Vancouver Island, reducing the station’s staff to seven and on-screen footprint to a single 30-minute local newscast anchored at 4:30 p.m. from Vancouver.

Meanwhile, the employee-owned CHEK continued its surge in the market by hiring former Global BC anchor Paul Haysom for its 6 p.m. news broadcast. Haysom — who will anchor CHEK News at 6 for the first time Tuesday night — replaces former anchor Joe Perkins, who was hired away from CTV 2 in 2019 and has moved into a new role as CHEK’s news director.

CHEK also recently hired reporter/videographer Jordan Cunningham and digital editor Adam Chan, both of whom were among the layoffs at CTV 2. CHEK also promoted reporter April Lawrence to executive producer.

“There’s a ton of changes happening to the city right now, some good, some sad,” Perkins said. “As sad as it was for CTV 2 to make those cuts, it did open up a couple of opportunities for our shop.”

Stuart Adamson, the news director and manager of operations for CTV 2, was contacted via email but declined to comment for this story. But in a statement released when the cuts at CTV 2 were announced, he suggested Greater Victoria’s “workforce, demographics, viewing habits and varying industries” were well-suited to a 4:30 p.m. newscast.

Maybe because I'd just woken up, but I found tonight's CHEK News a little odd. Not sure who dressed the anchor, but he looked like he was about to bust out of that jacket/whatever, a little Charles Atlas. His banter with replacement weather lady Jessica (I gather a former classmate someplace) was a little forced/awkward. I do love a little eccentricity with my local news, however.

A familiar face and veteran broadcaster on Vancouver Island is returning to CHEK News.

Scott Fee, CHEK’s former News Director as well as a former anchor and reporter at the station, has been hired to produce and anchor CHEK’s weekend newscast.

________________

Fee replaces Hannah Lepine who left CHEK in December to return home to Calgary to be closer to her family.

I scolled back 50 more CHEK articles on twitter, none had blocked comments.

Even on the original post:

That had 18 comments, all against the actions of the man.

Did he actually get naked in there or just walk in by accident? so weird. He obviously has his family and kids with him.

I walked into the ladies change room by accident recently to go to the bathroom before hitting the gym. I didn't realize until I was confused by the sudden swap of the toilets and the changing tables. I exited very rapidly with lots of nasty looks.

Sure I saw that but that was when he is fighting with whoever is filming him. ****, I might have said that to someone if they chased me out with a camera in my face! haha. He is holding a kid and I assume his wife holding his other kid come and swat the camera away. The key to justice is a fair trial. If he got naked in the ladies changeroom then he is guilty as charged. If he went in to get his kid or something and was chased away by an enraged Karen and was just trying to get her to F off then he is not guilty as charged. Media doesn't care. They will use this regardless.
