As of early 2026, Meta has largely stopped paying for news content globally, having actively moved away from commercial deals with publishers. Following 2024 announcements, Meta ceased paying for news in Australia, France, and Germany. The company has also removed news availability in Canada rather than pay under local regulations.
Australia: After initial deals made around 2021, Meta has refused to renew deals, leading the Australian government to explore options to compel payment for news.
Canada: Meta blocked news on its platforms to avoid paying for content under the Online News Act.
Europe: Meta terminated partnerships with publishers in France and Germany.
Other Regions: Similar to Canada and Australia, Meta has generally resisted new regulatory requirements in other jurisdictions, preferring to reduce news content on their platforms.

But nobody can share the link. Others will now chime in with their observations about the fire.

They literally embed Instagram posts in their articles. ^

It almost makes one long for the days of real news, when it was all sourced from government press releases, unidentified spokesmen, and officials who wished to remain anonymous.

Does Twitter pay media for use?
They are under the revenue amount that would make them subject to the act.

Over the past week, you may have noticed some technical difficulties with our broadcasts. We want to share that these were the result of a cyber incident affecting parts of our technical infrastructure.
We take this situation very seriously. Our team, alongside external cybersecurity experts, responded immediately to contain the issue and begin recovery. Throughout this, we have remained on the air – something we are proud of – and continue to deliver our newscasts, even as we work through temporary adjustments.
We also want to reassure you that there has been no data breach. Sensitive information, including personnel and client data, remains secure.
