Why does chek continue to post to meta if they are so upset by it? Last time I was out of country and looked, they were posting many, many times per day.

Following 2024 announcements, Meta ceased paying for news in Australia, France, and Germany. The company has also removed news availability in Canada rather than pay under local regulations.

Australia: After initial deals made around 2021, Meta has refused to renew deals, leading the Australian government to explore options to compel payment for news.

Canada: Meta blocked news on its platforms to avoid paying for content under the Online News Act.
Europe: Meta terminated partnerships with publishers in France and Germany.

Other Regions: Similar to Canada and Australia, Meta has generally resisted new regulatory requirements in other jurisdictions, preferring to reduce news content on their platforms.

So much of the news that media covers originates on social media. What if Meta and others turn the tables, and say, if we can prove your story originated via posts to our platforms, you now owe us money?

Now we have people saying “just saw on CHEK about the fire!”

But nobody can share the link. Others will now chime in with their observations about the fire.

They literally embed Instagram posts in their articles. ^

And use Facebook photos and videos in their coverage. Online and on the air.

A chek news hour probably has only 10 minutes of original news content created by them. The rest is just reading media releases, CBC News videos, the Upside guys and weather. They are also now showing lots of news borrowed from Seattle media.
