The DRA has announced a job, paying $30/hour for 12 hours per week, for a position called Land Use Planning Advisor.

Is this the first time a CALUC has posted such a job?

Community associations have become just another bureaucratic hurdle that adds cost and delays development projects. Like many of our civic governments, they have deviated much too far from their intended purpose.

Out of the ordinary but in this case I think warranted. Helps is going to rush ahead with her plans to reshape Victoria into a socialist mecca before she leaves office. As we just saw with her Government St plans, the DRA, DVBA and common folk who live and work in the City aren't going to be part of that process until the decisions have already been made and/or they force themselves in.  I don't see Jeff Bray speaking up so kudos to the DRA for showing some initiative.

How will paying a member of the DRA $360/week stop the CoV from pushing through the changes they want?

The agenda may be adopted by the subsequent council can just as easily rewind it.

Where is the money for this position coming from? Are CALUCs going to become government-funded review departments now?

This is a great question.

I am sure that there are groups within the DRA that will happily foot the bill.

I think we can all agree, that the private funding by secret donors of professionals to help form the positions of a neighbourhood association is going to be ripe for questions pertaining to conflicts.

It’s one thing if a private group wants to lobby government, but it’s another when a government sanctioned organization receiving government dollars is now accepting private money for professional services to help it form its feedback to council.

They get plenty of money from the City.

$11,000 per year in 2021. Up from $7,XXX 2 years ago.

Plus they have been asking for much more funding, like the NPNA is now getting.

There is also another position they hope to fill, paying $30/hour at 20 hours a week as an engagement coordinator.

Both of these positions are listed as terms from April 15 to the end of December.

Who is going to fund ~$35k in contract work?

I’m not sure if you are deliberately being funny. 😄

The taxpayers are paying for it all.

Growing in the City Volunteer Coordinator Grants provide funding to eligible organizations responsible for managing Growing in the City initiatives to help hire a volunteer coordinator. Eligible Growing in the City initiatives include community gardens (as defined in the City’s Community Garden Policy), community boulevard gardening, and the Urban Food Tree Stewardship Program. The grants are intended to provide funding for a person to conduct outreach and coordinate volunteers and to promote educational gardening and food growing opportunities for the community.

The 2021 intake for the Growing in the City Volunteer Coordinator Grant program opens November 15, 2021 and will close January 31, 2022, which will allow for Council consideration of applications in February 2022 and payment of approved grants in spring 2022.

Have a great idea for a project or program that supports the actions and outcomes of the City of Victoria’s Strategic Plan, builds community resilience and advances Council’s stated Values on Equity?

Each year, non-profit and community organizations are invited to submit applications for the City’s annual Strategic Plan Grant funding by January 31.

In 2021, Council provided more than $470,000 in Strategic Plan Grants to 53 community organizations. Close to $500,000 in funding is available this year.

Strategic Plan Grants are awarded for projects and programs that support one or more of Council’s eight objectives that guide the City’s work:

1. Good Governance and Civic Engagement
2. Reconciliation and Indigenous Relations
3. Affordable Housing
4. Prosperity and Economic Inclusion
5. Health, Well-Being and a Welcoming City
6. Climate Leadership and Environmental Stewardship
7. Sustainable Transportation
8. Strong, Liveable Neighbourhoods

Direct-Award Grants are paid to organizations that deliver a service on behalf of the City on an ongoing basis, including organizations that operate a City-owned facility. These grants are awarded annually by Council without a competitive process; annual reporting back to the City is required. Direct-Award Grants include:

Community and seniors centre operating grants
Neighbourhood base grants and insurance
Final Report
Heritage grants
Recreation Integration Victoria
Volunteer coordinators for each neighbourhood with a community garden
Youth Council
City of Victoria Grant Policy
