Chard's Yates/Johnson towers will be topped out at about the height we see HP1 at in those photos.

This is going to finally change the skyline...

Now we need about 20 more like it scattered around downtown and Victoria might start to have an actual skyline.

Will this direct link work? August pic from the Hotel Grand Pacific...

Edit: or maybe I should have said, "Will this indirect redirect link work?" See shoeflack's more direct approach below.

^Not for me on Chrome :( . Right click the image and select 'Open image in new tab'. Though I suspect based on your link I found the one you were trying to link to.

What a lame tabletop we’ve created.

Sigh.

And here come the skyscraper fanboys, right on cue.

The skyscraper fanboys complain because the buildings are too short and there aren't enough of them. The stinkers complain because the buildings are too tall and there are too many of them.

Meanwhile, aastra and the tourists enjoy the view because it looks great. No problem. Very urban but also very pretty. Distinctive. Sparkling at night. Just keep going with the Victorian formula. Don't feel like you need to alter course one way or another just 'cuz.

20 years of anguish over height and that’s what we have to show for all of that turmoil and hair pulling.

🤦‍♀️

Agreed. At the present time the old shopping mall building reigns as the worst thing in the most prominent location. I see the recladding threads on other forums and I keep my fingers crossed that it will get spiffied up someday. (The Government Street side has already seen major changes, of course. But Wharf and the side streets needs work as well.)

I'm becoming a fan of reclads of modern buildings that maintain the original style for the most part (rather than erasing it altogether) but otherwise do it better. Sharpening the character and the defining details, more distinctive cladding, addressing specific shortcomings re: the pedestrian realm, etc. A while back I was also musing about the good effect that redesigned corner commercial units could have on the Wharf Street side.

It's low-rise and mostly clad in brick. It meets all the CoV design requirements.

Good points aastra. I wonder if there will be new pressure on that property, once the gazillion dollar Customs House sets a new price point for Victoria. This place is right next door. Let's hope it will go through a creative update before long.

Don't be so sure.

The Customs House folks can't have too much hatred for this building, after all they are leasing space here for their sales centre.

Something is happening on the carriageway behind the Hudson. The vertical boarding has been extended towards the Fisgard end, and the turning point to parking below the Mews reduced to a single lane, with a temporary traffic light installed. Unsure what the plywood laying on the lane itself is for.

I hope they're not calling it quits and dismantling everything that they've built up to this point.
