One assumes that there are multiple levels of security to prevent a hacker from getting into CRD water supply system at the disinfection plant, where the chlorine and ammonia are mixed to provide the chloramination protection. However, even just being able to momentarily hide the cessation of disinfection might be a target for a hacker?

In Florida, the issue was tampering with the additive sodium hydroxide which is apparently useful to raise pH of the water and thus reduce corrosion.

As I recall, CRD didn't have their treatment plant computer system (SCANA, I think). plugged into the internet with the reason being to avoid hacking at that point.

I think you are thinking of SCADA, a system used for industrial automation and control.  It would not surprise me if it is airgapped.

News today: CRD acquires 58.7-hectare watershed to further protect Greater Victoria drinking water supply

The land acquisition is at top North end of Sooke Lake Reservoir watershed and looks to be at least in part within Koksilah Watershed (images below) so I'm wondering if this might spark a request from Cowichan Valley region to share some CRD water - like divert through Grant Lake and into Koksilah River?

Relate news story: Water levels in Koksilah River critically low again this year

Grant Lake is a beautiful little spot - I've landed on it in a floatplane several times over the years..

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Oh that would be so sweet, North Shore, to get able to do that. I’d love to fly into some of our remote lakes on the north Island.

If it's yellow, let it mellow; if it's brown, flush it down...

  • View Royal has approved the Capital Regional District’s request to borrow up to $34.3 million to upgrade aging wastewater pipes, manhole covers and pump stations throughout the core area service region. CRD staff have planned out five years worth of upgrades to parts of the wastewater infrastructure that are nearing the end of their useful life.

^^^^

I'm confused - I understood each municipality was responsible for their own wastewater pipes, manhole covers and pump stations? CRD is paying for 'core area service region' and this is NEW money - so all muni's get to pay a piece of this, even those who don't directly or even indirectly use it?

^ Munis are responsible for their local systems, CRD handles the trunk lines. There's a map of their infrastructure online as part of the McLaughlin Point project: https://www.crd.bc.c...project-map.pdf

Hopefully someone can answer a question for me . I was told by a guy in the ground sprinkler business that different municipalities have different  rates for water. The water rates were a deciding factor on where he lives . I can see farm’s having a cheaper rate by why houses .

I can see water prices being ranked #421 in terms of importance when selecting a home.
