canadians are twice as likely to watch as us residents.

CTV:

Without a host or a great deal of pizzazz, ABC's telecast of the Academy Awards reached its smallest audience ever of 23.6 million viewers.

The Nielsen company said Sunday night's audience was down 20 per cent from a year ago. The previous low-water mark for the Oscars was the 26.5 million people who watched in 2018.

In Canada, the broadcast attracted an average of 4.6 million viewers. That's down from last year, when 5 million people tuned in.

the boy ii filmed here in victoria is not doing too well with the critics.

https://en.wikipedia...y_II#Production

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 9% based on 22 reviews with an average rating of 3.29/10.[12] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 32 out of 100, based on nine critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews."[13] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C–" on an A+ to F scale, and PostTrak reported it received an average 0.5 out of 5 stars, with 24% of people saying they would definitely recommend it.[11]

Benjamin Lee, writing for The Guardian, gave the film one star out of five, describing it as "so punishingly dull to watch, filled with dry, perfunctory dialogue from Stacey Menear’s consistently uninventive script and shot without even a glimmer of style, that even at a brisk 86 minutes, it feels like unending torture" with a finale "that buckles under the weight of its own stupidity, as well as some god-awful CGI.

Ticket sales plunged to their lowest levels in at least 20 years at North American movie theatres as the coronavirus pandemic led to one of Hollywood's worst weekends at the box office.

Receipts totalled about $56 million in U.S. and Canada theatres, according to studio estimates Sunday. Not since September 2000 has weekend box office revenue been so low, according to data firm Comscore, when $54.5 million in tickets were sold on a quiet weekend. More people went to the movies the weekend after Sept. 11, 2001.

Hollywood also has postponed most of its upcoming releases. Next week's most anticipated movie, “A Quiet Place Part 2,” has been removed from the schedule. Other major releases, including Disney's “Mulan” and the James Bond film “Die Another Day” have been put off.

That means that even if movie theatres remain open in the coming weeks, they will have little to play.

i'd say that's good for 1,000 layoffs or cutbacks in canada.

The University of Victoria will welcome moviegoers back to campus for three nights of drive-in theatre screenings this week, joining a growing list of exhibitors turning to the decades-old format as a viable entertainment option.

The university has announced it will show a trio of movies outdoors on campus starting Thursday night with Hook. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is screening Friday, while The Breakfast Club is on deck Saturday.

Why do people go to music concerts when they can watch YouTube clips for free?

Drive-in movies promote car use and should be banned.

A concert and drive-in movie are hardly comparable...

I will admit I occasionally find myself at a concert - especially in nose bleed seats - wondering the same thing actually.

but there is something about seeing a performance live - concert or sport - that’s quite thrilling. being in the same space as the performer.

with movies no matter what format you do not get that.

When the Vic Theatre reopens Friday, it will become the first movie house in Canada to get back to business during the COVID-19 era, according to organizers.

A trio of film festival favourites will return the Douglas Street theatre to operation for the first time since its closure in mid-March. Lost in Paris will reopen the cinema at 5 p.m., followed by Trip to Greece at 7:45 p.m. The World Before Your Feet joins both films on the schedule Saturday.
