It doesn't matter what you and I think, what matters is what the municipalities think.

A #1 ranking doesn't make Victoria's City Hall stop and think, we need to fix the roads, because livability is starting to fall. It reinforces that investing less in roads has no negative impact on livability. Survey said so.

There is absolutely an impact here, from surveys published by highly reputable organizations. The Renters dot com ones etc. don't mean anything.

I do not think you are right...  And yeah it matters what you and I think... The just talked about road maintenance more than ever yesterday.  No one said we are #1 let's relax on the roads.

Esquimalt was #1 in Climate... :)

Is this weird, this article states Fort St. John (not in the covenant list) was 19th and went through each category where they finished top 50 in only one of them.  How do they get to 19th?

Fort St. John ranks in top 20 of Canada’s most livable cities (energeticcity.ca)

All conspiracy aside Victoria is part of the whole of the area. Victoria is not really a city on it's own. They should change the name of the airport to prove a point.....

The situation is beyond the pale. The roads are ridiculously substandard.

But it has no impact on livability, survey says.

Yes but you made a statement that since the City is #1 there is a conscious decision not to maintain roads.  That's silly.

Yeah the ranking really should be for Greater Victoria.

No, you took that totally out of context. As usual 😎

I did?  I took it to mean the City looks a the #1 rating and doesn't think they need to maintain roads.  Livability is still high whether roads are maintained or not.  This is a conscious decision to reduce maintenance of the roads.  Anyway, maybe be more clear.

Hopefully this is helpful for folks who use parkades.  Just an early, soft launch..  Still some glitches..

Thanks to new technology, you can now see available spaces at five Victoria parkades
The software uses motion-sensor cameras to keep track of the number of vehicles entering and exiting each parkade

While there are five parkades, viewers are presented with six options, including two for the Broughton Street parkade — one for the Broughton Street entrance and another for the Courtney Street side.

The software was created by Mistall, a Canadian-based company and FastPark Ltd., a Canadian-based contractor, and has been adopted by other municipalities, including Kelowna and Whistler.

Digital signage is expected to be installed outside the parkades in a second phase of the project.

The city pays approximately $2,375 a month in software licensing fees for each camera.

For more information, go to victoria.ca/parking.

Motion sensor cameras for 6 figures per year? What’s wrong with pneumatic tube counters? Ismo?

I think cameras can be more accurate.

But yes that figure seems steep.

But if I'm reading the annual report correctly, parking revenue is around $12 million and another $4 million in fines.  So maybe $120,000 is not too big a chunk.

200,000 people in downtown Victoria on an average day in 2013?  Where did that number come from? Greater Victoria pop was about 354,000.
