If I'm not mistaken, and Caramia please correct me, some businesses use murals as a bit of an advertisement, where they would not be allowed to use a sign of that size. Two examples come to mind: The self-storage opposite the arena with it's "dog hiding bones" theme, and also Westcoast Appliances with a large mural facing south on Gorge Rd., near Jutland, nearly the same thing as there sign logo design but with no words.

And there's that beautiful mural on the north-facing side of the Fifty-Fifty Art Gallery on Douglas at Bay, opposite the Times-Colonist. The second time that wall has been decorated--fabulous work! Looks like the same artists painted the former cell-phone hut in the parking lot next door. I can't wait to see what the artists do next time they're inspired!

(Must be affiliated with the design-signs-printing place in the old Sitka space? or them and 50/50 together?)

YES. I talked to them, they even thought it had gone much too long with the old work, they were itching to get on with the new one...

I wonder how the Opus art store on Herald St. would feel if you tagged their building with their specialist graffiti spray paint.

Opus does not actually call it that (that I could tell) but they have a disclaimer:

"Please paint responsibly."

Owners hired a painter for a graffiti-type mural on the corner store, Quadra & View. We saw the painter work day after day with scaffold etc. so assumed he was hired. The owners appear to be using graffiti to stop graffiti in the same way that Wildfire Bakery did.

Looks to me like graffiti has become a broad term and we need to break it down.

Agree,

I love grafitti art, sanctioned and non sanctioned.

I hate tagging more than most petty thievery crimes.

OK, I understand you now.

Wow, well you've surpassed all my ex boyfriends and most of the time myself. Don't suppose you are single?
:P

Regarding the arrangement that Wildfire Bakery (or the building behind 5th St Bar & Grill) made with it's artists and the various governing civic policies, I'd be really interested if anyone knows the details. Our notices from the City to remove graffiti have never differentiated between the good stuff and the tags.
Nowadays most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one's mistakes.

In Vancouver, the VPD and city joined forces with local artists to paint large sections of the Granville Street bridge. It's been a few years since I lved there, but I found some pictures of the artwork on flickr:

If I'm remembering correctly, the artwork rotates every now and then.
