A motorcyclist avoided serious injury Saturday evening after colliding with a vehicle at the intersection of McKenzie Avenue at Saanich Road.
On May 1, 2021, at approximately 8:30 pm a motorcyclist was westbound on McKenzie Avenue when it struck a vehicle turning left at the intersection at Saanich Road. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle and remarkably suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to the hospital for further treatment and observation.
Collision Analysts and our Traffic Safety Unit continue to investigate the cause of this collision.
“As May is the start of Motorcycle Awareness Month, this incident comes as a reminder to all motorists that many more motorcycles are now on our roads compared to previous months. Motorcyclists are reminded to take proactive measures to ensure they are seen on the road, avoid being in the blind spots of other drivers, and to watch their speed, especially at intersections. All other motorists are reminded that motorcycles are often closer than they appear, and it is sometimes difficult to judge the speed they are moving, so be prepared to yield.”
Driver Seriously Injured in Crash Friday Evening
May 3, 2021 - File: #21-9553
A driver sustained serious injuries in a two-vehicle collision Friday evening.
On April 30, 2021 at approximately 7:00 pm emergency responders attended the 700 block of Greenlea Drive for two vehicles involved in what was believed to be a very serious collision. One of the vehicles had crashed off-road into a tree and the driver was trapped inside.
Saanich Fire was able to extract the trapped driver, who was rushed to the hospital by ambulance with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.
The other driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.
An investigation by our Collision Analyst Team and Traffic Safety Unit continues to determine all the factors involved in the collision and if criminal or Motor Vehicle Act charges are warranted.
“Factors such as alcohol impairment, speed, and driver error are being looked at by officers investigating this serious collision.”

In any other city that would be a very bad place to be trapped in a car.

I guess Island Corridor Foundation will now have to be called out to inspect an imaginary rail line to make sure it’s safe for invisible trains.

A single vehicle roll-over crash in Esquimalt could have had a much different outcome had it not been for bystanders who took immediate action to free the motorist from the vehicle as it caught fire. More from VicPD:
Victoria, BC – Officers are thanking bystanders who took lifesaving actions to rescue a driver in a rollover collision on Saturday morning.
Shortly after 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 29th Patrol officers were called to the intersection of Devonshire and Fairview roads for a report that a vehicle collided with a hydro pole, rolled over, and caught fire. Officers arrived on scene and learned that two bystanders witnessed the collision and then extracted the injured driver from the vehicle, which came to rest upside down. A third bystander obtained a fire extinguisher from a nearby business and worked to extinguish the fire.
BC Emergency Health Services Paramedics attended and transported the driver to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An additional bystander, who was near the scene of the collision at the time of the incident, narrowly avoided being struck by the vehicle and was also transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A VicPD Traffic collision investigator, and VicPD Traffic collision analysts were called to the scene to conduct an investigation. The hydro pole involved in the incident fell over and BC Hydro attended and de-energized the lines during the incident.
The cause of the collision is believed to be a medical incident involving the driver of the vehicle.
This file remains under investigation.

Odd how all the anti-car folks are targeting SUVs for being too big, tall, whatever and bad for pedestrian safety, but rather than pedestrian safety improvements to buses, we stick cow catching bike racks to their front bumpers.
Hope the pedestrian is OK. Not sure how you hit someone there.
