Sorry looks like it was Douglas not Saanich. My mom's friend just said "the road behind Best Buy" and my mom assumed Saanich.

Someone wrote us to say there was an argument between two people, one person got shoved and ended up getting crushed by a recycling truck.

that’s one way to definitively win an argument.

score that one 1-0.

The day this incident occurred, someone made a now-deleted post on Reddit asking about lawyers for a minor, saying it was in self-defence and that the attacker died via vehicle.

Sounds similar to that incident on Pandora years ago. A guy got into a verbal confrontation with a street person who got shoved and fell into the street and was hit by a car.

Saanich police say the other man was arrested at the scene so unless he was on Reddit in the holding cell it's probably a coincidence https://twitter.com/...231691734577154

I don't think so. It was a young business man or something. A street person, a young woman I think mouthed off at him, triggering a shoving match. Ten years ago?

I didn't see the posts before they were deleted by the OP, but the comments in another thread indicated it was a family member asking on the minor's behalf.  I don't doubt that it could be a coincidence at all, especially since the tweet doesn't say it was a minor (although male doesn't mean adult ).

I heard someone got stabbed during that altercation. What is the stabbee, or the stabber who died?

Saanich councillor De Vries made an odd series of twitter posts speaking about drivers killing people, not cars. I don't think he knew the person had been shoved and assume it was a pedestrian walking down the street or crossing the street/

There's a post on Reddit from someone claiming to be in the area stating the deceased was being somewhat aggressive, but the youth charged with the manslaughter was the only one who used physical violence.

It's pointless to speculate based on some internet posts.  Eyewitnesses are notoriously unreliable as it is.

Devries' posts were sure odd.

this is the one on Pandora from 2009

https://www.timescol...appeal-1.662220

A Victoria man has lost his appeal of a manslaughter charge for pushing a woman onto the road at a downtown intersection in 2009, where she was crushed beneath a bus.

Christopher Michael Groves, 25, was sentenced in December 2011 to a year in prison, as well as two years probation and 250 hours of community service with homeless causes. A B.C. Supreme Court jury found that Ariana May Simpson, a 20-year-old known to Victoria’s street community, fell under the wheels of the bus at the corner of Quadra Street and Pandora Avenue after a push from Groves.

Weird:

From the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report: motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States rose to a 13-year high in 2020 despite a decrease in overall driving due to the COVID-19 pandemic

*Occupant ejections +20%
*Unrestrained passengers +15%
*Speeding-related +11%
