...but coincidentally the heaviest vehicles are also EVs, by class.

Must be real gas-guzzlers!

I guess what I was getting at is if you took a sample of 100 cars from the 70s you’d maybe have 10-20 SUVs or trucks compared to >50 in a sample today. As a pedestrian, it’s much much more dangerous to get struck by a truck or SUV, and there is a much more likely chance of that happening now, because they are much more prevalent.

Dad’s 1970 coupe was three feet longer and half a foot wider than mom’s SUV today.

Cars are much smaller today, on average. But the word SUV is triggering in our society even if the size of today’s average SUV is what a mid-sized sedan was back then. Most SUVs are not Chevy Tahoe’s, either. They’re crossovers, aka sedans with taller profiles.

The Pontiac Parisienne was a radical design when introduce because of how small it was.

The recent time change may have given us an extra hour of sleep, but a Sunday night collision involving a cyclist and a vehicle prompted Victoria police to remind road users it also removes an extra hour of daytime visibility.

The crash happened shortly after 11 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the intersection of Bay and Blanshard streets. The cyclist was being attended to by bystanders and the vehicle occupants when officers arrived on scene, a VicPD release stated.

https://www.vicnews....ity-challenges/

Drivers are also advised to fully illuminate their headlights and tail lights, fully scan their surroundings and make eye contact with pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers. In turn, VicPD is reminding cyclists to use both front and back lights, wear a helmet and scan their surroundings.

Thanks for the reminder. But an 11pm crash has nothing to do with time change or sunlight hours.

Also not sure what “fully illuminate” means in the above. Is there a lower setting we’ve had our lights on all summer? (Yes I know daytime running lights sometimes substitute for headlights but the taillights part makes little sense).

Who writes this sh*t?

It also does not "remove an hour of daytime visibility" it just moves it.

Three RCMP officers were transported to hospital this morning following a crash along the Pacific Marine Route.

Shortly after 8 a.m., officers travelling southbound on the corner of the 22 kilometre mark collided with a portion of a logging truck.

The logging truck was travelling northbound and lost its load of logs impacting another police vehicle.

John Ducker: Darker days mean danger on the roads

It’s well documented that during the fall when we revert back one hour and things become dark early, collisions of all types increase somewhere in the area of six to ten per cent

By: John Ducker

The darker, rainier days ahead call for cautious driving habits, such as slowing down, keeping your distance and making sure your windshield is clear.

Simon and Garfunkel pretty much sum it up for this time of year: “Hello darkness, my old friend. I’ve come to talk”…or in our case…‘drive’… with you again.”

It’s standard time once more. Great. Blinding low sun afternoons, inky blackness by 6 p.m., grit and muck on our windshields. Depressing for sure. But this year there’s more at stake than usual. We’re shaking off the rust from two years of COVID slowdowns as we try to find some forms of normalcy and the Christmas “rush” will no doubt be one of those old normals.

The onset of darkness this time, as we emerge from COVID, adds up to some serious driving safety challenges. As one example, Hyundai recently polled motorists in the U.K. and found that 20% of the respondents had forgotten key driving skills and were finding it “difficult” to adjust to being back behind the wheel. Police also reported speeding and driver aggression events had noticeably increased in several jurisdictions throughout Europe and North America during the past two years — attributed to less traffic volume.

Can’t say I’ve seen this before. 24h of rain and this town is a mess.

Agreed, it’s a fiasco. But we all know in the back our heads that the infrastructure in this region and in other regions of this province is under-developed, inadequate and in poor shape. We’re not the only jurisdiction with severe weather but we seem to go through so many weather events far more battered than we should be.

Only if he was on the left side of the road.

On Wharf street, the City erected some new traffic controls.

Southbound on Wharf, you can no longer turn left onto Broughton or Courtney.  This means that the only spot to turn left is now onto Fort Street (why did they remove the dedicated left turn lane here again?).  This is complicated by the fact that you cannot currently go straight through the intersection at Wharf to Humboldt because of the construction.

Northbound on Wharf, there are now no left turns allowed into at least one of the surface parking lots.

You can barely turn off Broughton northbound onto Wharf as is, it’s so tight you have to wait for the southbound traffic to clear to safely do it.

It’s as dog breakfast podunk Victoria Really Is Just a Big Chilliwack road as there ever was. We tried so hard to be cool, only to realize the cool kids paid no attention to us.

They’ve now taken down the “no left turn signs” southbound on wharf.
