If the motorcycle is not driven by a human I don’t think the motor vehicle act applies anyway

Impaired driving investigation underway after woman crashes into Esquimalt lamppost

March 18, 2022

Victoria police say impairment may have been a factor in a single-vehicle crash that sent a woman to hospital Friday morning.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Bernard Avenue and Esquimalt Road, with the 40-year-old driver receiving what appeared to be minor injuries, according to Victoria police Sgt. Ryan O'Neill.

The woman was later taken to hospital for treatment of facial injuries, he said.

Police say they're investigating for impaired driving, as well as lack of insurance and driving while prohibited.

You couldn't make this stuff up on Trailer Park Boys.  These people really do exist?  Bunch of illiterates driving over the park in a wackadoo frenzy.  First we have Together Victoria's assault on the park and now this?

Don't Teslas have sensors to stop them from turning bank into a drive-thru ATM? :D

The new ones do have a sensor to decide forward or backwards automatically when you are starting out. The “shifter” is software.

SERIOUS COLLISION INVOLVING MOTORCYCLIST ON MCKENZIE AVE THIS MORNING

Date: March 29, 2022 - File: #22-5959

On Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at 6:30 a.m. several officers and emergency services providers responded to a serious collision between two vehicles, a motorcycle and a car, on McKenzie Avenue at Arelene Place. It was reported that the motorcyclist, who was travelling eastbound on McKenzie Ave, contacted the rear portion of a vehicle that was turning left from Arelene Place. The impact resulted in the rider being thrown from their motorcycle. Several commuters stopped and remained on scene to provide assistance, including an off-duty first responder. The driver of the vehicle involved is cooperating fully with the investigation. The motorcyclist was transported to the Victoria General Hospital where their condition is believed to be very serious, but no longer life-threatening. We are offering support services to all of those affected by this incident.

As part of the investigation, our Collision Reconstruction Team required the full closure of McKenzie Avenue at Arlene Place to process the scene and retain evidence. This closure is expected to remain in place until around 12 p.m. today. We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding in this lengthy closure. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

'L' driver slapped with 3-month ban after Oak Bay police spot woman putting bumper into car

Oak Bay police say a new driver has had her licence suspended for 90 days after an officer reportedly saw her trying to put her "newly fallen off" bumper into the backseat of her car.

Police say the incident occurred just after midnight on Wednesday in the 1100-block of Beach Drive.

Police say the woman was displaying signs of impairment, and was asked to take a breath test.

The responding officer also learned that the driver only had a "learners licence," so she was handed six additional tickets, including one for driving without a supervisor, driving with too many passengers, driving past midnight, having blood alcohol content above 0 – which is prohibited for L drivers – driving without due care, and failing to display an L sign.

John Ducker: Unlicensed drivers a hazard on the road

April 14. 2022

I couldn’t help noticing that news feeds over the past couple of weeks had more than their fair share of articles about crashes involving unlicensed drivers.

From Burnaby to New York state to Australia’s Gold Coast, there have been scores of news items, most ending with a horrendous crash, all with one thing in common — the person behind the wheel was unlicensed.

One of the worst examples came last month from west Texas, where a 13-year-old boy driving a Dodge 2500 pickup crossed the highway centre line and plowed head-on into an oncoming van full of university students returning from a golf tournament. The fiery hell that resulted killed nine people and injured several more, including two Canadians.

The preliminary information from the crash investigation indicated that the pickup’s left front tire, which was a spare, had blown out.

A licensed and experienced driver is challenged to the limit of their operating ability in a blowout scenario. An unlicensed 13-year-old would simply have no chance.

Texas law requires that a person be 15 just to apply for their learner’s permit. Why this child was behind the wheel is still under investigation.

It’s happening here, too. Late last year, Burnaby Mounties nailed 10 unlicensed drivers in one night.

All of this reminded me of when I tagged along several years ago to see a mobile advanced licence plate reader (ALPR) being used on the street in real time. I was shocked.

The device literally “pinged” every three to four minutes, alerting the operator to passing vehicles that were uninsured or drivers who were prohibited from driving or unlicensed.

Oak Bay cops just the other day suspended the learner’s license of a woman they caught who was a lil’ drunky.

Ducker's read was OK, but you have to be a bit careful.

Whether the person has a license or not isn't really the determining factor of whether they are a good or bad driver.  Although bad and careless drivers lose their license more often.

Some libertarians don't bother to get licenses.  They are fine drivers.

Do they also break traffic laws, not wear seatbelts, and refuse to put their kids into car seats? Or do they just selectively avoid government regulations but still take solace in driving vehicles with government-mandated safety advancements?

They mostly object because the license has a persons home address on it, and linked through DMV computers, and your home address has nothing to do with your ability to safely operate a car.

They - quite reasonably - argue that the provincial government and/or licensing authority has no business even knowing your home address.   Maybe even the federal government doesn't, except maybe for income tax reasons.

Yes, the struggle is real.

Libertarians look at it more holistically.

For example, kids of any age do not need a license to operate a lawn mower or chain saw.  Or a bicycle.  Or until recently, a boat of almost any size.  Those are pretty dangerous.   But it all works out.

Just because the government tests and licenses you, does not mean you are particularly good at it.  As seen in crash statistics.  And if you were good at 16, does than mean you are good at 56, 40 years after your last road test?  Probably, but that is more through experience, than having the physical license.
