Over 200,000 accounts now for Starlink in Australia. Nearly 2% of all households.

A new report suggests Canadians' television viewing habits continue to shift toward streaming platforms at the expense of traditional cable and satellite subscriptions, at a time when the federal regulator is considering new rules to help level the playing field across the sector.

The annual Couch Potato Report released Monday by Convergence Research says 42 per cent of Canadian households did not have a TV subscription with a traditional provider by the end of last year. It forecasts that by the end of 2026, half of all households won't be traditional TV watchers.

Meanwhile, the report says more than 80 per cent of Canadian households subscribe to a streaming service, while 70 per cent subscribe to both TV and one or more streaming services.

Last year saw 2.6 per cent of Canadian TV subscribers cut the cord, as the revenue brought in by traditional TV providers declined three per cent to $7.2 billion — a pace the report predicts will continue through 2026.

Meanwhile, streamers' Canadian subscription revenue rose 14 per cent in 2023 to $3.73 billion and is forecast to reach $4.24 billion this year.

Is it strange to anyone esle that "cable" subscribers are down, but literally the very same cable that brings in cable TV powers your internet.

Are cable rates too high, because the CRTC forces you to watch a bundle?  Or should fees to the channels on cable TV be reduced if they want to keep markert share.  Or maybe some providers do not care, since they also have internet options (like TSN and Sportsnet do)?

These days it's the other way around for most folks. The very same 'cable' that carries your Internet data carries your 'cable' TV. This aint the 90's/00s anymore.

Cable in quotes because it's a fibre-optic cable, not a copper one now - with the exception of last mile to the house - depending on your provider.

Well, I guess what I mean is it's not very difficult to activate "cable" in most homes, since they already have the physical hook-up.  And a TV or two.

Yet people choose not to have that active.

Most providers will bundle basic cable in for free for a term. Personally I told them no. I don’t want a tv box sitting around I never use and I don’t want to run the risk of forgetting to cancel 4-8 weeks in advance in which case they ding me 50/mo

The old guys at my house are just loving the MeTv. All those old shows, and the commercials…
