Customers are increasingly seeing a gratuity option on card payment machines in industries where tipping was never previously part of the cost, from auto shops to fast food giants like Subway and Domino's.

"Tipping is spreading to a lot more places right now, so where we wouldn't have previously been prompted to tip, now it seems to be a lot more common," says Simon Pek, an associate professor at the University of Victoria's Gustavson School of Business who researches tipping practices.

As customers shift away from carrying cash, it's easier than ever for any business to ask for a little bit of extra money by adding the automatic prompt — what psychologists call a "tip nudge" — to their card payment machine.

Looks like doctors are already doing it.

Another blast from the past - Holden West.

To keep the post on topic, I had a customer recently pay twice what their bill was because they said we don't charge enough (we don't).

We don't have a tip option on the credit card machine.

Do the McDonalds workers feel left out?

I tip at Subway. No option at McD.

Was surprised to see Tow Trucker drivers are in on the Tip thing now or they have been for a while as it is a service I don't use that often.

We had a fellow deliver a 26 foot trailer up a long, windy, narrow driveway. I tipped him a hundred, not sure what the norm is there.. probably not a money making day for him.

Wonder how many people are simply thinking twice about going out.

/\ Been that way @ Subway outlets for many months now, possibly even as much as a year, and I still remember my mild surprise/amusement the first time I encountered it....

There’s a selection for “other”, as well as one for dollar amount instead of percentage. I haven’t seen a machine without these.

Is there a shortcut to a “No tip” option so you don’t have to go fishing for it?

Why? All the folks working these jobs deserve much more than they are getting.

I left my favourite sun hat behind at the Brentwood Inn. Went back to see if they had it on the trip to the Aviation Museum. I was so happy they still had it, all nicely wrapped up. Had to practically force a $10 tip in to the guys hands. He said because he was front of house he couldn't take it but would pass it on to his staff. Don't care if he did.

That should be the responsibility of the employer, not the customers.

You were a gov't worker. I was a few times. Now you have a pension and a condo. Yes they should pay their employees more but they are not. A buck or two to the person making your sandwich is not going to hurt you.
