Bridge collapse in Taiwan a couple days ago: https://youtu.be/WOag4uTlGss

the truck (tanker?) that was going across left to right just failed to make it.  just 1/2 a second away from safety.  not his day.  his front wheels got there but then it fell out from under him.

It’s nice to see some proper maintenance on the bridge after the City of Victoria was found guilty of negligence causing the collapse of this bridge and the death of 55 men women and children.

Not quite regular, but the bridge will permit two-way traffic flow. There will still be restrictions and delays.

From the City...normal flow during the day, restricted flow weeknights.

During November, the restriction to eastbound traffic will still be necessary during evening periods Sunday – Thursday from 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. (open to two-way traffic Friday/Saturday evenings). While these evening closures are necessary to safely complete the final bridge upgrades, they will not affect daytime traffic and two-way access across the bridge from 5 a.m. – 7 p.m.

That mass sigh of relief you heard was from those of us who take the #14 UVic-VGH bus into the d/t core each morning, also known as the "GhostBUS(ter)" route, for all those scheduled runs that inexplicably never show up.....

Average time from my inbound stop along the usual route across the Pt Ellice bridge to my downtown stop kitty corner from the office, is about 12-14 minutes; since its been re-routed over the JSB while the work was done on the PEB, that was ratcheted up to 30 minutes, even 40+ one not-so-memorable morning.

There's no notice from BC Transit yet that they 14/10 will be returning to the regular route.  Considering the 14 switched with the September service change, it might not revert back until January.

Personally I hope they leave it as is. The 14 meandering down Bay then Douglas then onto Fort just makes no sense when so few riders board north of Chatham or east of Tyee.

I often see quite a few people waiting to board by Popeyes at Bay and Douglas that are esquimalt or Vic general bound.

Yeah, many among them getting off a bus there as opposed to in downtown.

And what I mean by that is transferring at that stop, not solely walking up to that stop.

they also proposed to make this change permanent even before it was implemented for the detour in the Jubilee plan https://www.bctransi...s/1529703325282

Yes, exactly.

Fun fact is I never transfer there. It’s just too ugly/high traffic of an area and the stop is exposed to a vehicle careening onto the sidewalk with nowhere for pedestrians to take cover.

plus there is a high propensity to be seen by others.  then you get a text or a social media tag indicating you are on the "loser cruiser".  reputation damage ensues.  your tinder prospects diminish.

Very much so. It’s a bad stop all around.

But the pros know to hide around out back and every so often poke their head out to see what’s happening.

I think the railings are the main (visible) thing that has changed on the top of the bridge, and of course the new road surface.

A word of warning, the chemical smell at this part of the bridge is overwhelming.

“On May 26, 1896 in Victoria, British Columbia, a streetcar crowded with 143 holidaymakers on their way to attend celebrations of Queen Victoria's birthday crashed through Point Ellice Bridge (today usually referred to as the Bay Street Bridge) into the Upper Harbour. 55 men, women, and children were killed in the accident, making it one of the worst transit disasters in British Columbia. Only passengers on the left side of the streetcar escaped.

On June 12, 1896, a coroner's jury concluded that the tramway operator, the Consolidated Electric Railway Company, was responsible for the disaster because it allowed its streetcar to be loaded with a much greater weight of passengers than the bridge was designed to support. The city council of Victoria was found to be guilty of contributory negligence because the bridge had not been well maintained, and because council failed to take steps to restrict the traffic on the bridge to within safe limits. The design and construction of the bridge was also found to have been poor, especially in that the....”
