On two occasions in the past week I have seen the police with small telescopes at the side of the road waching for drivers on cell phones. Once it was a tripod mounted scope, and another time it was an officer on the Pat Bay with an unmarked SUV. The back window was rolled down and the officer with scope was present. Just up the road was the waiting patrol car. Just like on TV!

Good for them. Maybe they can watch out for the asshats who can't figure out how to use their turn signals too :)

I give this broke government about 6 months before they bring back photo radar.

Not to be racist against cell-phone drivers, but pretty much every time I'm almost hit by a car, it's always someone chatting on their phone while making a left turn towards me legally crossing the steet. I also won't mention that about 75% of the time it's an SUV driven by a soccer-mom type.

I've seen just as many people on cell phones runing red lights since the ban came into effect as I did in the months before.

I'd have to agree that physically holding a phone is only a small part of the danger. Some people completely zone out when they are on the phone and their reaction times are greatly increased. Just a few days ago I was behind someone who signaled to change lanes and then he just drove between the lanes for a couple of blocks before he finally made it all the way over. Sure enough, he was using his phone.

Was almost run down by a lady on her cell phone making a left off Blanshard onto Fisgard today...

In fact I'd say about 75% of the time I'm almost hit, the person is on their damn cell phone. Been lots of interesting studies about how when we talk on the phone a big chunk of our brain works on imagining what the person on the other end looks like, imagining we're there talking with them. Takes our focus off the road and into this imaginary cell-phone space.
