‘Massive step’ for North Saanich farms: $750K donation kickstarts local food hub

Currently, over 90 per cent of food consumed on the Island comes from outside the region, but the facility could impact that, farmer says

https://www.vicnews....ood-hub-7984124

The $750,000 is going to pay for a 1000 square foot facility. And they want the municipality to give the land and some operating costs.

Funny the article doesn’t say what the 90% will be reduced to. I’d suggest maybe to 89.97%.

Cocoa would be nice, and also the impending raisin shortage is coming so some of those, too.

Saanich to set limits on residential buildings on farmland

A planned bylaw amendment would limit residential buildings on agricultural land to a footprint of no more than 2,000 square metres

Why cap it at a fixed number like that?  Why not use floor space index like you do anywhere else?  Why should it be the same for a 2 acre farm and a 40 acre farm?  Making the outbuilding location near the residence seems petty too.

Isn’t this to deal with the McMansion issue that Richmond has? It’s residential footprint and that’s still huge, no?

What we really need in these dire times is more spaghetti farming. It would be ideal because after harvest it becomes dry and easy to store for the long term.

I don't know.  Let's say you are a municipality with some big lots (Saanich).  And a wealthy family wants to build a very big house.  What's the "problem"?

Saanich farm owner ordered to shut down businesses not related to farming

Saanich was granted a court order telling the land’s owner to evict individuals living in RVs in a covered horse-riding ring, and to close a metal shop on the rural property
