Now that the harbour at Laurel Point has been cleaned up, now they need to do the same near the Point Ellice Bridge.

Peter Ross, executive director of the Coastal Ocean Research Institute, said he was surprised that the high contaminant levels in Victoria's waters were not a single type of contaminant, such as PCBs or mercury or hydrocarbons.

"It was basically everything," Ross told On the Island host Gregor Craigie.

High concentrations of more than a dozen chemicals were found in the Victoria harbour, including lead, mercury and PCBs. The highest levels were found near the Point Ellice Bridge, more commonly known as the Bay Street bridge.

^I don't know why it's surprising. Every industry imaginable was based in that area: tanneries, slaughterhouses, plywood processing, basically anything that was too nasty to have at the Inner Harbour.

Rock Bay was a prime example.

Apologies if there is a more appropriate thread for this (as it's not really an "issue), but I had a pretty sweet vantage from my desk yesterday of what I can only assume was the container ship used to barge the new JSB bridge deck into place shoving off to sea.  You can see especially in the second photo just how massive it is - the red arrow points to a huge crane truck on the deck that basically looks like a Hot Wheels on there.  Sorry for the grainy photo quality.

Welcome back again.... and I see you're a bit rusty.

Photobucket not so good. The forum now has it's own way of hosting photos and it's FREE.

Funny, those photos appeared fine when they were posted. Grainy, but fine.

I haven't renewed my old Photobucket account, so folks might find the same message on some of my old posts.

Photobucket now only allows a certain number of views before the whip comes down and the link is shut off until you pay a hefty annual fee.

Pretty much the only cruise ships I ever see are the ones at Ogden Point and I think they're pretty frickin' big.

But you are saying after the proposed expansion, the larger ships we'll get will still only be the third biggest class?

That's mind-boggling.

Yup, the Oasis-class are the second largest cruise ships afloat and offhand I can't recall the largest but its got to be literally right out of the shipyard since the Oasis ships aren't that old. Regardless even bigger ships are on the horizon, including the 200,000 GWT World class. Prior to the Norwegian Bliss this year even the largest ships to visit us are guppies compared to what's out there now, and in the near future.

I think I posted this before but to put into perspective how big these ships truly are here is a composite of the Allure of the Seas - an Oasis-class cruiser - coming up astern of the Titanic (which compared to today's ships is truly a minnow...):

^ I like the part about ho hum, we will just come up with another $3M - $4M and go with plan B. Whole thing sounds fishy to me.

well it says that but then later in the article it says they are not responsible for the lost steel but just for some extra costs to seek an alternative.

in any event hope they can fix it that new cruise ship is important

Yeah but those extra costs are the $3M - $4M. Why not just get the supplier to send over more steel and save the money?!

Wouldn’t this just be an insurance claim? What’s the big deal

.

I think now it’s a race to get work done before that ship is due in.

Well apparently the HA didn't have ownership of the steel until arrival so there would be no claim there. The question would be whether they were insured for and could claim costs related to them having to go with 'plan B' to hit their timeline.
