Hmmm, but is iconic what we really need? I mean, is it *equitable* enough you know?

Personal note: "iconic architecture" means looking like a double-wide phone booth.

I admit I was really hoping for some Selkirk-style architecture when Hillside/Douglas eventually redeveloped. I imagined new construction and the old buildings coming together to make it feel like a neighbourhood, like you were in the middle of something rather than just passing through something.

I think I hope too much.

I mean there's also this bad boy under construction in Florida

Guitar%20Tower%20Sky%20View.jpgIt's probably the first building in the world to look better with its construction crane than without it!

Wowzers.

I’m scared to ask what it’s called.

Oh, I think you are right. So it is technically a "new" Motel 6.

Metropolitan Hospitality purchased the hotel from long-time owner Charlie Danbrook following his retirement. Danbrook, who is turning 90 years old this year, had operated the hotel as Western 66 Motor Inn for 35 years in the 2400-block of Mount Newton Cross Road just off Highway 17.

Metropolitan Hospitality’s purchase extends the portfolio of the company. It also owns Holiday Express Inn in Colwood and manages Saanich’s Howard Johnson by Wyndham Victoria Elk Lake Hotel and Suites, along with a couple of other properties.

Haro’s, the dining room at the Sidney Pier Hotel and Spa, will close Jan. 1 for an extensive renovation before it re-opens in the spring as 10 Acres at the Pier.

Restaurateur Mike Murphy, who owns the 10 Acres Farm and Restaurant Group that includes a Saanich Peninsula farm as well the 10 Acres Bistro and Commons in downtown Victoria, will take over the space in the new year with plans for a reinvented dining room and patio.

Former councillor Shellie Gudgeon’s brother.

Murphy also acted as part owner of Fifth Street when Gudgeon sold it to him and the owner of Lucky/Fiamo. Not long after Murphy sold his stake to the Fiamo fellow.

Changes are afoot at the DoubleTree by Hilton at 777 Douglas Street. No idea what the scope is, but they had a DP for exterior renovations on the Advisory Design Panel agenda last month.

Edit: As no variances are requested, this application will not show up on the Development Tracker

It could be something trivial but if it's major I hope it's the Penwell facade:

Whatever it is, it apparently involves the addition of a new balcony.
