GOOD GREIF

How about, the first time we built outside the fort walls ... Victoria has never been the same since!

is there a downside to including a new conference centre into the new museum plan? now that would be a behemoth project, especially if the maritime museum got consolidated into it also. i'm also with the CEO on the dysfunctional entrance. i think it should do more to engage belleville st, and also thunderbird park & helmcken house.

The conference business is no longer a viable business in Victoria. Tax payers are losing millions keeping the conference centre afloat.

I thought part of the problem the last few years was our high dollar? We are now an attractive location for Americans looking for something "exotic" are we not?

There are very, very few non-Canadian events taking place at the VCC.

Regardless, we're subsidizing the VCC to the tune of over $600,000 per annum. That's crazy.

Conference centre space is massively overbuilt throughout North America.

That's a pretty big generalization. There are some places I don't think that's true. Like Vancouver.

Overall, the conference industry is hurting. Everyone got on the conference bandwagon in the late 90's and 00's and now there's a major glut. Couple it with the fact that people love to go to exciting places when attending conferences and you end up with our situation having to subsidize that beast by who knows how much (it was nearly two years ago that we were spending $620k per year keeping the VCC afloat.

Except that Victoria is already a destination for tourism. Conference facilities combined with a tourist-friendly community seems like a good thing to me.

But were not a top-level airport destination. Getting here requires switching planes somewhere.

This is a factor that affects a lot of "big" business in Victoria. One of the reasons we are not a head office city. But then that begs the question...do we need to be a head office city?

Anyways, I'm off topic now.

what if the part of the museum close to the intersection were built into a parabolic dish, so the sound of the carillon could be projected across the harbour? that would be a pretty good way to take advantage of the location there.
