But on the island it would just be two officers, correct? I mean, it's not like that car lot incident last week where you have ten officers with the plastic bullets and tasers and tons of backup. With two people confronting a man harming a woman there aren't as many tools in the toolbox. Not excusing the death, it could be they over-reacted. Tragic all round.

i think police had to travel to the island to look into the incident.  Opisaht population is less than 200.  not sure if the island has another population centre.

Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation to have monitor involved in RCMP shooting investigation

March 1, 2021

In Tofino Monday, there was still shock about what happened.

Twenty-eight-year-old Julian Jones was fatally shot by an RCMP officer Saturday night.

Chief Moses Martin says his First Nation generally has a good relationship with Tofino RCMP but is making an immediate change.

“If they’re going to come into our community they’ve got to have an escort from our community,” he said. “That would have helped de-escalate the situation.”

^ Even better, I would support the RCMP not going there at all and letting the FN community police themselves as they have done for thousands of years.

Mar. 2, 2021

The Oak Bay Police are doing the best they can to soften the atmosphere of their interview room for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

If police feel compelled to fire, Sayers asked them to aim for an arm or somewhere less invasive. More training is needed in de-escalation, she said.

Sayers, who does not know the details of what took place, questioned whether the RCMP is the best agency to deal with domestic matters.

As for the future, “The political pressure from First Nations means that something has got to be done so I certainly have hope. I just think we need to come up with some concrete solutions.”

B.C. RCMP did not have immediate response to the letter from Indigenous leaders.

Anyone else want to provide their analysis?!

^ ^ the old "shoot for the arm" is a nice touch too.

maybe the reserve/island/community has a domestic abuse problem.

Or even better, shoot the knife/gun out of someone's hand just like they did in the old westerns.

Do they still have an aggressive looking room for the offender?

Bravo to Chief Manak and his team...I can vouch for the fact that the water @ Willows beach was damn cold - but they dunked themselves in it for charitable reasons...not because they had to, but because they wanted to!!  (i looked around but couldn't see Comrade Isitt anywhere!)

He was probably afraid he'd accidentally turn the water into wine, what with his messianic complex and all.

Isitt is not a fund raiser, he’s a fund user. Big difference.

Lack of mental-health support inhumane, Manak says
  • 5 Mar 2021

People with severe mental illness need more than a roof over their heads — they need wraparound services and care, Victoria Police Chief Del Manak said Thursday.

“We have to recognize that leaving people who are chronically ill, underserved, in need of medication and mental-health supports on the streets to fend for themselves is no humane way to deal with anyone.”

Haven't we been told that all of the provincially provided housing comes with "wraparound" supports? I suppose it was my fault for assuming this meant more than having your dealer available 24/7.

Talk about street-level mental illness; my day off today so dropped the wife at her d/t office at 7:45 then zipped over to Pandora McDonald's to grab a java. Turned onto Pandora to head home and two street laddies about 50 meters down the road just wandered out into Pandora, intent on crossing over to the other side. And totally oblivious to traffic and just about anything else.

I slowed down at which point they just stopped to have a 'convo' right there in the middle of the road. I creep up slowly, wait maybe ten seconds then lean on the horn. They go nuts and start screaming and threatening me. Not a well conceived plan. I check the rear view, there are no other cars behind me so I put it in park and get out to "have a word". Well I'm 6' and 275lbs and they......were not. They keep it up, yelling at the top of their lungs with the one guy trying to finger stab me in the chest. The only problem was they were both wearing black balaclava's pulled right down over their faces down to the neckline - they were totally "blind", couldn't see a damn thing and "buddy" with the finger was facing 180 degrees in the wrong direction "stabbing" thin air!

I didn't know whether to laugh at, pity them, or tuck one under each arm and deposit them on the other side of the road. Worse once I was outside and actually able to hear them it was very evident they were either very high on something and/or suffering serious mental issues because they were wobbling all over the place (and still positioned right in the middle of the street) utterly incoherent barely able to stand up, never mind cross a busy city thoroughfare. And this is the sort of thing I imagine VicPD members have to deal with dozens of times each and every day. No wonder the chief and the rank and file are frustrated. And he is correct leaving such people to fend for themselves is beyond inhumane because inevitably they are going to hurt someone, get hurt themselves, or they're going to die in the process.

Thankfully, you didn't encounter a "most vulnerable" armed with a weapon, AsE.

^^The problem is already solved- I’ve been assured by council. If we keep publicly offering free housing, food and drugs to anyone who arrives in victoria, the problems will disappear.

Honestly he was so incapacitated and incapable I seriously doubt he could have hit the broad side of a barn door with a 12 gauge from three feet away.
