City of Victoria Councillor Sonya Chandler has announced that she will leave her position as City Councillor effective September 1, 2010. Sonya has been awarded a full scholarship to pursue a Masters Degree in Sustainable Health Systems in the European Union. A by-election will be held this year to fill the vacancy.

Why doesn't a candidate step forward that is absolutely, positively pro-amalgamation? Surely they'd win.

Can this By-election and the bridge referendum be combined? Or is the city prohibited from saving money?

Yes, that is the plan.

Robert Randall will be on CFAX with Dave Dickson at 1:35pm today.

What a shame that I, too, will be embarking on a Masters program in September; or you would all be pledging fealty to Councillor Fugger. ;)

Do you think she could take Madoff and Luton with her?

Is the EU giving you a full scholarship, or are my taxes and car insurance premiums paying for your program?

Just clicked through and it's Wayne Hollohan's turn. Asked by the host what his reaction to the announcement was, he said, "here we go again."

He's right - I forgot that she stepped away from the job for quite some time to take maternity leave.

Not hard finding pro-am candidates in Victoria, the problem is nobody else in the CRD wants to.

The CFAX poll is interesting with 74% saying a by-election is not worth the expense. In fact the CoV has no choice under the Local Government Act. Once a resignation is tendered the act kicks in.

What is interesting is that 274 people consider democracy too expensive. Maybe they should be asked their preferences for alternatives.

Just ask the person with the next highest amount of votes to step in, seems pretty democratic and fair.

I think that 274 people are saying that it is too expensive to have an election for 1 person when the bias/slant of council will not change.

Did she cause a bi-election at the time she took maternity leave?

Maternity leave is different than quitting.
