If it’s a properly engineered pad/ramp why would it result in more injury than normal park use?

I’m having a hard time imagining what a ‘properly engineered’ pad/ramp to replace cliff jumping would look like...

But yeah, the current cliff jumping spot has the inherent natural barrier of being wild/illicit/dangerous. This keeps away everyone except the young&dumb.

Once you give people a properly engineered replacement (whatever that is- a diving board?) two things happen. The young&dumb won’t use it because it’s not dangerous enough. They keep jumping at the same cliffs, or find newer potentially more dangerous spots if old spot is inaccessible. Resulting in the same or more injuries.

And the ppl who’d otherwise not jump from cliffs will be emboldened to use the new replacement, but some of them will lack the skills/ swimming ability to do so safely, resulting in more injuries.

didn't the crystal pool used to have a "tower" for high jumping?

maybe commonwealth does have one for competitive diving?

I guess so. But the idea would never fly in a lake that crd won’t even pay a single lifeguard to sit at. Way too risky.

And iirc (my cliff jumping days are about a decade behind me), it’s for sure 30-40 feet, not meters. Still high enough for serious injuries, particularly if you don’t know where to aim for from the “left side” cliffs (aka “suicide cliffs” when i was younger&dumber). There’s a much easier spot on the right side not far from the beach trailhead.

Commonwealth has a really tall jumping tower with about five different heights it’s pretty cool and with slide at top.

wouldn't that be something if at the finals at the Commonwealth Games, the top Australian diver instead took the slide on her final jump.  would she still get some style points?   :rtfm:

30-40m seems a bit excessive. I'd be surprised if there was anything over 10m.

Crappy reporting and/or fear mongering.

the dive tank is fairly deep and it is slightly warmer then the other pools, it has multiple levels of diving board (a few actual boards and some just platforms) the higher up levels are not accessible for day to day pool users, but are for divers in training, when things are normal (not covid swimming) they usually have 3 of 4 of the levels open just not the top few highest during a public swim

crystal pool has two diving boards.. one that is set on the ground level.. and one on a tower, both are accessible (during non-covid times) during a public swim

the cliffs have shrunk by over 50% now.  that's good.  maybe next week they will be down under 5m.

View Royal council recently considered a bylaw to prohibit cliff jumping at Thetis at heights over a metre, but it was sent back to town staff for more work. Cliffs at Thetis can be as high as 18 metres.

Why isn't everyone taking the bus?

Bus?

Hell no. Why isn't everyone taking their bikes? We have after all sunk millions into turning our peice of paradise into a biking mecca. You would think that they would flock out to enjoy this great blkiing weather and a chance to enjoy the water.

What’s great is Thetis is a massive lake, but only has one limited parking area despite the population being twice the size as when it was built.

The CRD did build a large lot for Sooke Hills. Maybe they’ll build another one for Thetis somewhere in the Highlands?

Maybe we should close the parking lot down?

Durrance lake is overdue for a parking expansion too. There’s maybe 30-40 spaces, and all summer long the cars are parked on willis pt road. They should also make a nicer beachy area on the far end of durrance where theres good sun exposure.

The B.C. government plans to conduct aerial-spray treatments in three locations on southern Vancouver Island in spring 2022 to prevent Lymantria moths from becoming established and to minimize the risk they pose to forests, farms, orchards and urban trees.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development has applied for an amendment to its existing pesticide use permit issued in March 2021 for Lymantria moths (formerly known as gypsy moths).

The planned 2022 treatment areas on Vancouver Island are:

View Royal (50 hectares south of Thetis Lake Regional Park and the Trans-Canada Highway)

Nanoose Bay (1,068 hectares south of Nanoose Bay to the northern boundary of the City of Nanaimo)

Cowichan Lake (402 hectares at the easternmost tip of the lake and part of the Town of Lake Cowichan)

These planned treatment locations are in addition to five areas in the Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland. Last year’s monitoring program trapped 98 male moths in these eight areas, indicating that the moths could become established in those locations if the proposed pesticide spraying is not done.

Trapping and monitoring results from 2021 show evidence that Lymantria moth populations have increased dramatically in the areas slated for treatment this spring, likely because of outbreaks in Ontario and Quebec over the past three years. Egg masses are commonly transported to B.C. on recreational vehicles and outdoor household articles originating from affected areas outside of the province.

If left untreated, the invasive Lymantria moths could spread to other areas of British Columbia and pose a threat to native forests, orchards and urban trees. Trees such as Garry oak, arbutus, red alder, aspen, cottonwood, maple, orchard fruit trees, nut trees and many species of urban ornamental trees would be affected, as well as food crops such as apples, blueberries and other fruits.

The ministry is planning as many as four applications of Foray 48B in the specified areas between April 15 and June 30, 2022, to control the moths. Foray 48B is used in organic farming and the active ingredient Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki (Btk) is naturally present in urban, agricultural and forest soils throughout the province. It only affects the stomachs of caterpillars such as Lymantria moth caterpillars, and is specific to their digestive systems.

Btk has been approved for the control of Lymantria moth larvae in Canada since 1961. It does not harm humans, mammals, birds, fish, plants, reptiles, amphibians, bees or other insects. It only affects Lymantria moth caterpillars after they ingest it.

Residents in the planned spray areas are invited to submit their comments about this application to amend the existing pesticide use permit (refer to Permit No. 738-0032-21/24) for evaluation by the Integrated Pest Management Act administrator, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, Suite 200-10470 152 St., Surrey, B.C. V3R 0Y3, by March 12, 2022.
